Manufacturing Design Engineer Job Description The Mechanical Design Engineer plays a critical role on the integrated design team by ensuring that all mechanical designs meet demanding mission requirements. This position focuses on analyzing, designing, and modeling product enhancements for existing programs while also supporting conceptual designs for new initiatives. The engineer creates practical and compliant equipment designs, collaborates closely with production and testing teams, and prepares clear technical documentation and proposals. Responsibilities Analyze, design, and model mechanical product enhancements for existing programs and support conceptual designs for new programs. Provide practical, functional, and compliant equipment designs that meet mission and performance requirements. Read and interpret technical specifications, proposals, pricing information, and related correspondence to inform design decisions. Evaluate designs for performance, safety, and reliability, and refine designs based on engineering analysis and feedback. Perform engineering analysis to support the selection of parts, components, and materials that meet technical and operational requirements. Generate accurate and comprehensive technical component documentation, including drawings, models, and specifications. Provide technical assistance and guidance to production teams during builds and to testing teams during validation and verification activities. Prepare clear and detailed technical proposals, quotations, reports, and presentations to support internal and external stakeholders. Work on the shop floor during first-time builds to support manufacturing, resolve design issues, and ensure design intent is achieved. Essential Skills Proficiency in 3D modeling using Creo. Experience with SolidWorks for mechanical design and modeling. Strong skills in CAD for mechanical design and documentation. Hands-on experience with sheet metal design and fabrication. Experience in metal fabrication processes. Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, proposals, and engineering documentation. Capability to evaluate designs for performance, safety, and reliability using sound engineering principles. Ability to perform engineering analysis to support selection of parts, components, and materials. Experience generating technical component documentation, including detailed drawings and models. Ability to prepare technical proposals, quotations, reports, and presentations. Willingness and ability to work on the shop floor during first-time builds. 5+ years of relevant mechanical design engineering experience. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience collaborating with production and testing teams to resolve design and build issues. Strong communication skills to convey technical information clearly to cross-functional teams. Attention to detail and a methodical approach to documentation and design validation. Comfort working in a hands-on environment and engaging directly with manufacturing processes. Work Environment The Mechanical Design Engineer works in a mixed office and shop-floor environment, splitting time between CAD and 3D modeling workstations and the production floor, especially during first-time builds. The role involves regular use of Creo, SolidWorks, and other CAD tools to create and refine mechanical designs, with close collaboration alongside production and testing teams. The engineer participates in build activities on the shop floor to support manufacturing and ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
