Full Job Description Job Title:
Manufacturing Engineer, Systems & Automation Company:
Lowell Corporation Location:
West Boylston, Massachusetts Position Type:
Full-time, salaried, exempt
Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00
PM Compensation:
Salary paid weekly, exempt status About the Role Lowell Corporation is seeking an experienced, hands-on Manufacturing Engineer, Systems & Automation to strengthen our shop-floor engineering capability and help modernize how we manufacture and support our products. This is not an entry-level or purely software-focused position. We are looking for an engineer who already understands how a manufacturing shop operates, is comfortable working directly with machinists and production equipment, and can apply sound engineering judgment to real production problems. The role is highly project-focused. You will work closely with ownership, engineering, and production on CNC process improvement, tooling and workholding, new product setup, troubleshooting, automation, lights-out manufacturing, and the development of more structured engineering systems. Technology and software are important tools in the role, but practical manufacturing knowledge comes first. Key Responsibilities
- Own manufacturing engineering support for new and existing products, including process planning, BOMs, routings, work instructions, tooling requirements, and first-run support.
- Work directly with machinists and production personnel to solve shop-floor problems involving machining, setups, tooling, fixtures, workholding, quality, cycle time, and repeatability.
- Improve CNC machining processes and support CAM/programming optimization in coordination with shop programmers and operators.
- Evaluate manufacturability of new parts and jobs, determine practical production methods, and support transition from quote or design into repeatable production.
- Lead root-cause analysis and continuous-improvement projects involving scrap, rework, downtime, process capability, and production bottlenecks.
- Support and expand lights-out and unattended machining through better processes, probing, inspection, monitoring, tooling, and machine reliability.
- Evaluate and implement practical shop-floor automation and equipment improvements where they can improve capacity, quality, safety, or labor efficiency.
- Lead manufacturing and engineering special projects from problem definition through design, implementation, follow-up, and measurable results.
- Document and standardize successful processes so improvements are repeatable and scalable across the organization.
- Use modern engineering tools, including AI-assisted CAM, automation, data analysis, and software, where they provide a practical advantage to manufacturing.
Required Experience and Capabilities We are looking for someone with proven engineering judgment developed through real shop-floor experience. Strong academic credentials are valuable, but they are not a substitute for having worked in a manufacturing environment and solved production problems firsthand.
- At least 3 years of hands-on manufacturing engineering, process engineering, or comparable shop-floor engineering experience in a machine shop, precision manufacturing, or similar production environment.
- Direct familiarity with CNC machining and production equipment, with the ability to work credibly and effectively alongside machinists and operators.
- Strong mechanical and manufacturing engineering fundamentals, including tolerances, materials, GD&T, inspection, and process capability.
- Practical experience with tooling, fixtures, workholding, setups, process planning, and manufacturing problem solving.
- Experience developing or maintaining BOMs, routings, process plans, work instructions, or other manufacturing engineering documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to take a manufacturing problem or improvement opportunity from analysis through implementation rather than stopping at recommendation.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred; equivalent hands-on engineering experience will be considered. Preferred Experience
- CAM programming or process optimization using SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion, or similar CAD/CAM software.
- Fanuc controller programming with G and M coding for CNC milling and lathe operations
- Lights-out or unattended machining, probing, in-process inspection, or machine monitoring.
- Manufacturing automation, robotics, controls, sensors, or machine integration.
- ERP/MRP engineering data, including BOMs, routings, item setup, or engineering changes.
- Python, SQL, data analysis, AI-assisted engineering tools, or other software skills that can be applied to manufacturing problems.
- New product introduction, first-article support, fixture design, or production launch experience.
Why Lowell This is an opportunity to play a visible, hands-on role in how an established precision manufacturing company improves its engineering and production capabilities. You will not be limited to maintaining existing processes. We want someone who can identify better ways to manufacture, solve problems, and implement improvements that have a measurable effect on the shop. Lowell is investing in advanced CNC manufacturing, automation, lights-out production, improved engineering systems, and new technology. The right engineer will have the opportunity to combine strong manufacturing fundamentals with these tools to help shape how the company operates going forward. Position Details
