Job Description
Job Title:
Controls Engineer Job Description The Controls Engineer provides technical expertise to optimize highly automated manufacturing equipment and processes through visual systems, automation, and advanced levels of process control. This role develops, plans, organizes, and leads reliability and continuous improvement projects within the plant, while providing day-to-day technical support to Operations and Maintenance. Approximately 80% of the workload focuses on project-based controls engineering, with the remaining 20% dedicated to troubleshooting and resolving complex automation and control issues. Responsibilities Combine theoretical and practical knowledge to innovate new processes and drive continuous process improvements. Work independently on smaller projects from conception through completion, including hands-on implementation and commissioning of solutions. Collaborate in cross-functional teams to support plant business goals and operational objectives. Thoroughly document all technical work, including designs, changes, testing, and results, in a clear and organized manner. Serve as a shared technical resource within production value streams to assist with complex problem solving and root cause analysis. Lead and contribute to continuous improvement and Six Sigma project teams focused on efficiency, quality, and reliability. Support plant safety initiatives by actively participating in safety processes and integrating safety considerations into all engineering solutions. Support and lead plant industrial electrical systems, including troubleshooting and improving electrical infrastructure and controls. Lead and participate in process improvement activities with multi-discipline technical staff, maintenance personnel, and production teams. Mentor and coach employees to increase their knowledge of equipment, automation systems, and production processes. Work to eliminate waste through reliability improvements and by monitoring processes to ensure they remain in control and meet performance expectations. Provide technical support to Operations and Maintenance as needed, including on-the-floor troubleshooting of PLCs, HMIs, motors, drives, and robotics. Program, modify, and troubleshoot PLCs and HMIs to support new equipment, upgrades, and process changes. Support and troubleshoot Fanuc robotic systems, including robot programming and integration with other automation systems. Analyze process and production data to define problems, determine effective solutions, and measure the success of implemented improvements. Essential Skills Experience working in a manufacturing environment, with a preference for 5+ years in a similar controls or automation role. Proficiency with PLCs, including programming, troubleshooting, and integration with automated equipment. Proficiency with HMIs, including configuration, modification, and support of operator interfaces. Hands-on experience with motors and drives, including setup, tuning, troubleshooting, and maintenance support. Fanuc robot programming experience, including configuration, troubleshooting, and optimization of robotic systems. Ability to analyze data to define problems, determine solutions, and measure the successful implementation of those solutions. Experience with process control in a manufacturing environment. Ability to work independently on projects from concept through completion, including hands-on work on the plant floor. Strong documentation skills for recording technical work, changes, and project outcomes. Associate's degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience; candidates without a degree will be considered with 8+ years of experience in a similar role. Demonstrated ability to support industrial electrical systems in a plant environment. Strong troubleshooting skills for automated equipment, PLCs, HMIs, drives, motors, and robotics. Additional Skills & Qualifications Extrusion experience, particularly in highly automated manufacturing environments. PLC programming experience beyond basic troubleshooting, including development and optimization of control logic. Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field. Experience working with casting and extrusion equipment in high-temperature environments. Exposure to Six Sigma or other structured continuous improvement methodologies. Experience mentoring and training maintenance or production personnel on equipment and process understanding. Familiarity with process monitoring, reliability improvements, and waste reduction initiatives. Comfort working as part of a multi-discipline technical team in a large, automated facility. Work Environment This role is based in a large, 480,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan that focuses on processing and distributing aluminum products rather than primary aluminum smelting. The site produces and finishes common alloy aluminum products such as aluminum sheet, plate, and related semi-fabricated forms used for downstream manufacturing. It supports general engineering, automotive, industrial, construction-related, consumer, and medical device markets, supplying customers that machine, form, or fabricate aluminum into finished components. The facility operates as part of a broader fabricated products and distribution network, complementing larger rolling mills and extrusion sites in other states. The environment is highly automated and very clean, with advanced extrusion and casting machines that reach temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees. The Controls Engineer will work alongside three other controls engineers in the plant, forming a small, collaborative automation team. This is a first-shift role, typically running from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The dress code is casual, but the position is hands-on, and the engineer should expect to get dirty while working directly on machines and equipment on the plant floor. The organization offers a supportive culture with strong emphasis on training and professional development. Team members receive 10 days of paid time off, 6 standard holidays, and access to Udemy training after 6 months of employment. The role begins on a contract basis with a plan to convert to a direct position around 12 months, although the timeline can vary based on approvals. Work is stable, and some consultants have remained in long-term contract roles for up to 2 years. When converted, the position transitions to a salaried role, but remaining as a long-term consultant is also a desirable option for some team members.
