Manufacturing Engineer Job Description This role focuses on leading the development and improvement of manufacturing processes and equipment within the General Assembly trim shop. The Manufacturing Engineer serves as the "four-wall owner" for a dedicated zone, overseeing approximately 30 workstations and all tooling and equipment entering that area. The position combines hands-on manufacturing engineering with high-level program management, including coordination with design teams, suppliers, and plant personnel to ensure equipment meets specifications, floor layouts are accurate, and production readiness is achieved on schedule. Responsibilities Serve as the primary owner for a dedicated zone within General Assembly, overseeing all tooling and equipment within approximately 30 workstations. Program manage all equipment entering the assigned zone, from concept through installation and buyoff. Collaborate with design teams to ensure plant floor layouts are accurate, practical, and aligned with equipment and process requirements. Work closely with line operators to provide education and training on how to operate new equipment safely and effectively. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve processing issues within the assigned area to support stable and efficient production. Develop and refine material flow strategies for the zone to optimize throughput, ergonomics, and efficiency. Lead or support automation design activities, ensuring that automated tooling and equipment meet performance, safety, and quality requirements. Manage automation and tooling buyoff, working with suppliers to ensure equipment is built to specification and is ready for integration into the plant. Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, union-represented employees, leadership, and suppliers, to align on priorities and resolve issues. Direct the development and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes and equipment within the General Assembly trim shop. Work with suppliers to get automated tooling built and bought off in accordance with defined specifications prior to plant implementation. Support preparation of the plant floor layout and readiness activities to ensure smooth receipt and commissioning of new equipment. Apply principles of lean manufacturing to improve processes, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency within the assigned area. Document processes, changes, and equipment status as needed to support traceability, audits, and ongoing improvements. Essential Skills 2-3 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer with responsibility for tooling qualification, including qualifying tooling and machinery. 2-3 years of experience in plant manufacturing, preferably within a high-volume production environment. Demonstrated experience in manufacturing engineering or manufacturing process engineering. Proficiency in tooling-related activities, including understanding of tooling design, qualification, and integration into production. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and work cross-functionally with engineering teams, union-represented employees, senior leadership, and suppliers. Ability to lead and manage projects in a program management capacity, particularly related to equipment and tooling implementation. Experience applying lean manufacturing principles to improve processes and workflows. Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar CAD tools for reviewing or supporting equipment and tooling designs. Ability to work onsite as needed to support equipment installation, troubleshooting, and collaboration with plant teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Automotive program management experience is highly desirable. Prior experience working within a large automotive manufacturing environment is a plus. Previous experience supporting or collaborating with major automotive OEM programs is beneficial. Experience in automation design, integration, or buyoff is advantageous. Experience working closely with external suppliers on tooling and equipment projects is preferred. Work Environment This position is based onsite in a large automotive manufacturing plant within the General Assembly trim shop. The role is highly hands-on and requires regular presence on the production floor to oversee equipment, interact with operators, and coordinate with cross-functional teams. The environment includes exposure to automated tooling, machinery, and typical plant operations such as noise, moving equipment, and material handling activities. The engineer works closely with suppliers and internal teams to bring new equipment into the facility and ensure it is properly integrated into the existing layout. Work hours align with plant operations and may require flexibility to support critical installation, testing, or troubleshooting activities. Appropriate industrial attire and personal protective equipment are expected in production areas to ensure safety and compliance with plant standards. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lansing, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
