Motor Design Engineer Job Description The Motor Design Engineer is responsible for designing and optimizing electric motors to meet customer requirements while aiding in the capture and retention of profitable business. This includes working on all aspects of electric motors and their components such as winding, insulation systems, magnets, sensors, feedback devices, motor performance, tooling, process controls, and more. Responsibilities Design, prototype, assemble, and test electromagnetic topologies for high-performance aerospace and defense motors in an AS9100 environment. Develop breakthrough motor technologies to enhance market competitiveness. Optimize designs for manufacturability and cost through expert materials selection and GD&T. Utilize electromagnetic principles and analysis, including Finite Element Analysis, simulation, and modeling. Lead design and manufacturing processes to optimize cost, efficiency, mass, and thermal system tradeoffs. Collaborate with actuation system and test engineering teams to drive manufacturable designs for new programs. Ensure conformity to requirements and specifications by working closely with suppliers. Inspect and verify in-process and final product inspections to ensure specification compliance. Audit supplier processes to mitigate risks during manufacturing. Review technical documents to identify potential manufacturing challenges or cost drivers. Bring initiatives to closure through effective interaction with internal and external stakeholders. Understand and balance customer requirements with cost, technology, schedule, and risk. Adhere to all safety, quality, housekeeping, and company policies to ensure regulatory compliance. Contribute to a positive work environment through effective communication. Participate in team meetings and initiatives to support company goals. Assist in training personnel for technical tasks as directed. Consistently demonstrate commitment to company values and keep management informed of competitive and technological changes. Essential Skills B.S. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience. 5-10 years of experience in electromagnetic motors, windings, products, and systems engineering. Strong verbal and written communication skills for interactions with all levels of personnel and external agents. High computer literacy with expertise in MS Office and other applicable systems and equipment. Excellent problem-solving techniques and analytical ability. Experience with electromagnetic FEA tools such as ANSYS and Motor-CAD. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience designing motors for aerospace, defense, or high-reliability applications. Hands-on experience with simulation and modeling of Brushless DC and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM). U.S. Citizenship is required. Work Environment This role involves work in both a professional office and a manufacturing/machine shop environment. It requires the use of standard office equipment and may involve environments where eye, hearing, and foot protection are necessary. This is a full-time position, with potential additional time and weekend work as needed. Infrequent travel is required. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chaska, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $58.00/hr.
