POSITION SUMMARY
The Manufacturing Engineer is a member of UMF Medical's Operations team and applies mechanical engineering principles to develop, improve, and sustain manufacturing processes for fabricated and assembled products. The role uses SolidWorks to create and maintain 3D models, drawings, tooling, and fixtures that support safe, efficient production and consistent product quality. Working closely with Engineering, Production, Quality, Purchasing, and other departments, the Manufacturing Engineer translates product requirements into practical manufacturing methods, resolves production problems, and leads improvements in quality, cost, capacity, and delivery. The position supports company priorities and Rocks established through the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) while demonstrating UMF Medical's core values of Commitment, a 5-Star Customer Experience, Teamwork, an Innovative Growth Mindset, and Checking Ego at the Door.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and improve manufacturing processes, assembly methods, workstation layouts, and production flow to improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost.
- Use SolidWorks or other approved CAD tools to create and revise 3D part and assembly models and detailed 2D drawings for tooling, fixtures, equipment modifications, and manufacturing improvements.
- Design and implement jigs, fixtures, and production aids; coordinate fabrication, installation, trials, and operator training.
- Partner with product Engineering to review designs for manufacturability and assembly, including material selection, tolerances, fabrication methods, and serviceability.
- Provide hands-on production support; investigate process, fit, assembly, and equipment issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions with Production and Quality.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, standard work, work instructions, and visual aids that reflect approved manufacturing methods.
- Support new-product introduction and engineering changes through prototype builds, production trials, process readiness reviews, and release of manufacturing documentation.
- Create and update manufacturing BOMs, BOOs/routings, labor standards, and resource requirements in coordination with the Manufacturing Operations Coordinator and other system owners.
- Evaluate equipment and tooling needs, prepare cost and benefit analyses, and coordinate implementation of approved investments with Operations and Maintenance.
- Work with Quality to define practical inspection and process controls, reduce defects and rework, and support process validation activities when required.
- Analyze scrap, cycle time, downtime, and other production data to prioritize improvements and verify results; support material and labor cost-reduction initiatives.
- Manage assigned engineering projects and EOS Rocks from planning through completion, coordinating suppliers and internal teams and documenting results.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
(Preferred)
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline with a strong mechanical engineering foundation required.
- Two or more years of manufacturing engineering, process engineering, or closely related experience preferred, with hands-on work in a production environment.
- Practical SolidWorks experience required, including 3D part modeling, assembly modeling, and production-ready 2D drawings.
- Experience with fabricated and assembled products, tooling and fixture design, and manufacturing process improvement strongly preferred.
- Experience with sheet metal fabrication, welding, machining, mechanical assembly, or finishing processes preferred; experience in medical device manufacturing or another controlled quality environment is a plus.
ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SKILLS
- Working knowledge of mechanical design, engineering materials, manufacturing methods, tolerance stack-ups, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Ability to create clear SolidWorks drawings with dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, and revision information; familiarity with sheet metal and weldment tools preferred.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and use measurement tools to assess part conformity, fit, and assembly issues.
- Familiarity with manufacturing ERP systems and the relationship among BOMs, routings, revisions, labor standards, and product costs. Epicor Vantage/Epicor experience is a plus.
- Strong Microsoft Excel and general Microsoft Office skills for analyzing production data, documenting processes, and communicating project results; familiarity with CAD file and revision control preferred.
CORE COMPETENCIES
- Practical problem solver who combines engineering analysis with hands-on observation and input from production employees.
- Detail-oriented, with sound judgment and discipline in drawing accuracy, revision control, documentation, and follow-through.
- Ability to manage production support needs alongside improvement projects and meet agreed priorities and deadlines.
- Continuous-improvement mindset with the ability to apply lean methods, evaluate alternatives, and measure the results of changes.
- Accountable team member who works independently and builds effective relationships across departments.
COMMUNICATION
- Clear verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain engineering requirements and manufacturing changes to production employees, suppliers, and leadership.
- Ability to gather operator feedback, train employees on new methods, and communicate project status, technical decisions, and required follow-up.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This role combines engineering and computer work with regular hands-on activity on the manufacturing floor. The Manufacturing Engineer works closely with production employees and cross-functional teams in an entrepreneurial, growth-oriented environment. The position requires compliance with facility safety practices and use of appropriate personal protective equipment, along with the ability to balance planned projects and changing production needs.
