Project Design Engineer Job Description The Project Design Engineer leads assigned project teams in the design of products and systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial water treatment projects. This role focuses on executing projects from start to finish in accordance with proposals and client specifications, ensuring technical accuracy, quality, and timely delivery. The position requires close collaboration with internal teams such as Sales, Procurement, and Manufacturing, as well as external stakeholders including suppliers, clients, and their representatives. While some design drafting is involved, especially on smaller projects, the primary emphasis is on project execution, coordination, and ensuring that each project is completed accurately and efficiently. Responsibilities Lead project teams in the design and execution of products and systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial water treatment projects. Review project specifications, proposals, and client requirements to ensure designs comply with all technical and contractual expectations. Execute projects from start to finish, taking ownership of schedules, deliverables, and overall project accuracy. Prepare and revise design drawings, particularly for smaller projects, using 3D modeling tools and design drafting software. Perform typical design hand calculations, including pump sizing, flow velocity, and related engineering calculations to support design decisions. Coordinate closely with internal departments such as Sales, Procurement, Manufacturing, and other engineering teams to align design, cost, and production requirements. Interact regularly with the shop floor to support manufacturing, clarify design details, and address questions or issues during fabrication. Communicate directly with customers and their representatives to clarify requirements, provide technical input, and address project-related questions. Engage with suppliers to obtain technical information, review component specifications, and ensure compatibility with overall system design. Ensure all project documentation, drawings, and calculations are accurate, complete, and meet internal standards as well as client specifications. Support positive conflict resolution by addressing project challenges constructively and collaborating with stakeholders to find practical solutions. Use Microsoft Office tools to prepare reports, presentations, and project documentation as needed. Travel occasionally to client sites or supplier locations, when required by project needs, to support design reviews, inspections, or coordination meetings. Essential Skills Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering; Mechanical Engineering preferred, with other engineering disciplines considered. 1 to 5 years of design engineering experience preferred, with exposure to project execution and coordination. Ability to perform typical design hand calculations, including pump sizing, flow velocity, and related engineering calculations. 3D modeling experience is required, with preference for experience using Inventor. Experience with design drafting and preparing engineering drawings. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external partners. Positive conflict resolution skills and the ability to handle project challenges constructively. Excellent written and oral communication skills for interaction with clients, suppliers, and internal teams. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Ability and willingness to travel occasionally based on project requirements. Additional Skills & Qualifications Entry-level candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering are encouraged to apply. Mechanical Engineering background is preferred due to the nature of water treatment system design. Prior experience with commercial and industrial water treatment equipment is a strong plus. Experience working in a project engineering environment, coordinating with sales, procurement, manufacturing, and customers. Comfort working on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and timelines in a dynamic engineering environment. Work Environment The Project Design Engineer works in a professional engineering and manufacturing environment that combines office-based design work with frequent interaction on the shop floor. The role involves regular use of 3D modeling software (such as Inventor), design drafting tools, and Microsoft Office applications to create drawings, calculations, and documentation. Collaboration is central to the work environment, with ongoing communication among Sales, Procurement, Manufacturing, and other engineering teams, as well as with clients and suppliers. Most work occurs during standard business hours, with occasional travel to client sites or supplier facilities depending on project needs. The environment emphasizes accuracy, teamwork, and clear communication to deliver high-quality water treatment solutions. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Racine, WI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
