Project Design Engineer Job Description The Project Design Engineer leads assigned project teams in the design of products and systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial water treatment projects. This role manages projects from inception through completion, ensuring designs align with proposals and client specifications while coordinating closely with Sales, Procurement, Manufacturing, suppliers, and clients. The position emphasizes project ownership, technical accuracy, and effective cross-functional collaboration rather than pure design work, though it includes creating drawings for smaller projects. Responsibilities Lead project teams responsible for the design of products and systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial water treatment projects. Interpret and apply client specifications and proposals to ensure all designs meet project requirements and performance expectations. Execute projects from start to finish, taking ownership of scope, schedule, technical accuracy, and overall project quality. Review project specifications and technical documentation to develop appropriate design approaches and solutions. Prepare and update drawings for smaller projects using 3D modeling tools, ensuring all documentation is accurate and complete. Coordinate closely with internal departments including Sales, Procurement, Manufacturing, and other engineering groups to align project deliverables and resolve issues. Interact regularly with shop personnel to support fabrication, assembly, and testing of designed equipment and systems. Communicate directly with customers and their representatives to clarify requirements, address technical questions, and provide project updates. Collaborate with suppliers to obtain technical information, review component specifications, and ensure compatibility with overall system designs. Perform typical design hand calculations such as pump sizing, flow velocities, and related mechanical calculations to validate design decisions. Ensure all designs and project documentation comply with internal standards and client expectations for quality and safety. Identify and resolve design and project conflicts using positive conflict resolution and strong interpersonal skills. Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including drawings, calculations, and reports, with clear and professional written communication. Support occasional site or client visits as needed, including limited travel, to review installations or project requirements. Report project status, issues, and progress to engineering leadership, including the Engineering Manager, in a timely and transparent manner. Essential Skills Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, with Mechanical Engineering preferred; other engineering disciplines considered. 1 to 5 years of design engineering experience preferred, with exposure to mechanical or related engineering projects. Ability to perform typical design hand calculations, including pump sizing and flow velocity calculations. 3D modeling experience, with proficiency in Inventor strongly preferred. Experience with AutoCAD and general design engineering tools. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external stakeholders. Positive conflict resolution skills and the ability to handle challenging project situations constructively. Excellent written and oral communication skills for interacting with clients, internal teams, and suppliers. Competency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and ensure accuracy and completeness of project deliverables. Additional Skills & Qualifications Entry-level candidates with a relevant engineering bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply. Prior experience with commercial and industrial water treatment equipment is a plus. Experience working in cross-functional project teams involving Sales, Procurement, Manufacturing, and other engineering disciplines. Familiarity with mechanical systems, pumps, and fluid handling equipment. Ability to adapt quickly to changing project requirements and priorities. Occasional travel flexibility, depending on project needs (very occasional). Work Environment The Project Design Engineer works in a professional engineering and manufacturing environment that supports the design and delivery of commercial, institutional, and industrial water treatment systems. The role involves frequent collaboration with Sales, Procurement, Manufacturing, and other engineering teams, as well as regular interaction with shop personnel, suppliers, and clients. Work is primarily office-based, using 3D modeling tools such as Inventor and AutoCAD, along with Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and communication. The environment emphasizes teamwork, clear communication, and cross-functional coordination to ensure projects are completed accurately and on time. Occasional travel may be required to visit client sites or project locations, but this is infrequent. The culture values professional conduct, technical excellence, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Racine, WI.
