Job Description

Job Summary The Sterile Compounding and Specialty Pharmacy Technician prepares including intravenous (IV) admixtures, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and other sterile preparations, in accordance with <797>, USP <800>, and applicable state and federal regulations. Along with precise order fulfillment and packaging. This role ensures accuracy, sterility, and compliance with all pharmacy standards to support safe and effective patient care.
Key Responsibilities Sterile Compounding:
Prepare and compound sterile medications (e.g., IVs, TPNs, antibiotics,) under aseptic conditions in a cleanroom or laminar airflow workbench. Follow proper aseptic technique and cleanroom protocols per USP <797> and USP <800>. Maintain accurate labels and documentation for all compounded preparations.
Quality and Compliance:
Perform and document daily, weekly, and monthly cleanroom environmental monitoring and maintenance. Participate in compounding area certification, cleaning, and calibration activities. Adhere to policies for handling hazardous and non-hazardous drugs safely. Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards, including DEA, state boards of pharmacy, and company policies.
Inventory Management:
Receive, inspect, and store sterile compounding supplies and pharmaceuticals appropriately. Track and rotate stock to ensure proper expiration management. Notify the pharmacist or supervisor of shortages, recalls, or damaged products.
Collaboration and Support:
Work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Communicate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare staff regarding sterile product availability and issues. Participate in ongoing training and competency assessments for sterile compounding. Production Accurately assemble, inspect, and package patient specific prescriptions. Apply correct shipping labels, patient education materials, and ensure proper temperatures are maintained using specialized packing materials.
Qualifications Education:
High school diploma or GED required; completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
Must hold current pharmacy technician license/registration (Alabama). National certification (PTCB or NHA) preferred. Sterile compounding certification or documented aseptic training per USP <795><797>/<800> standards.
Experience:
Minimum 1-2 years of experience in hospital, infusion, or specialty pharmacy preferred.
Skills:
Strong attention to detail and precision. Knowledge of aseptic technique and cleanroom procedures. Ability to work in a fast-paced, regulated environment. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods while working in a cleanroom environment. Manual dexterity for handling sterile equipment and syringes. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
