Job Description
CAD Technician Sam Moore Furniture, a division of Hooker Furnishings, is seeking a CAD Technician for our plant in Bedford, VA. Hooker Furnishings, in its 101st year of business, is a designer, marketer, and importer of case goods (wooden and metal furniture), leather furniture, and fabric-upholstered furniture for the residential, hospitality, and contract markets. Position Summary The CAD Technician is responsible for digitizing and maintaining fabric patterns within the CAD system to support efficient cutting and production processes. This role develops CAD models, variants, markers, and cost data to ensure optimal material utilization and accurate costing. Approximately 80% of the role focuses on CAD pattern digitization, marker development, and system management, while 20% supports Product Development by digitizing new styles, patterns, and product files during the development process. This position is well suited for someone who is detail-oriented, comfortable working with computer systems, and has strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Prior CAD experience is helpful but not required, as training will be provided. Essential Duties and Responsibilities CAD Pattern Development & Management (Primary - ~80%) Digitize all fabric and leather patterns into the CAD system. Develop and maintain CAD models, variants, and markers for each active style. Create markers to achieve the highest possible fabric efficiency. Provide cost data for fabric patterns and cutting kits for all developed styles. Analyze new fabrics and Customers Own Material (C.O.M.) to determine the most effective cutting method. Verify repeat measurements on fabrics to ensure consistency with Sam Moore quality standards. Maintain CAD system organization including daily backups and file management. Review CAD work developed by other team members before release to production. Maintain and update spreadsheets and system data to ensure accuracy of style and material information. Product Development Support (Secondary - ~20%) Assist Product Development and Engineering with digitizing new style patterns, files, and components. Support Engineering with updates and revisions to developed styles. Help implement improvements to style patterns and CAD files during the development process. Cross-Functional Support Assist Cutting, Sewing, Upholstery, and C.O.M. departments with daily CAD and pattern-related needs. Support Customer Service with fabric yardage quotes for customers. Collaborate with Engineering and Product Development teams to improve pattern efficiency and accuracy. Qualifications Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or associate degree preferred. Experience working with computers, data, or technical systems strongly preferred. Experience in manufacturing, furniture, textiles, or pattern development is a plus but not required. Previous CAD experience is a plus but not required. Skills and Abilities Strong computer skills and ability to quickly learn new software systems. Physical ability to lift fabric rolls that weight up to 50 lbs. daily. Strong understanding of measurements and basic math concepts. High attention to detail and accuracy. Analytical mindset with the ability to problem-solve and improve efficiency. Strong organizational and data management skills. Ability to work collaboratively with engineering and production teams. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet tools preferred. Day Shift
