Washington State Ferries (WSF) is an essential part of Washington's transportation network. Our dedicated teams with over 2,100 people work together to serve our communities and shape the future of ferry travel. The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking to fill Oiler Internship positions. The internship positions will facilitate the accrual of training and sea time, pursuant to 46 CFR § 12.501/12.503. Candidates accepted to this position will be eligible to accrue up to 150/8-hour (100/12-hour) sea days of engine-room service, depending on their sea time requirements. What to Expect Interns will perform ship-board training on a 12 hour-on/12 hour-off schedule with a 7 day-on/7 day off rotation, under the guidance of vessel engine officers and rated personnel. Successful completion of this program is applicable toward the balance of sea-service requirements of QMED/Oiler or Junior Engineer certification courses. Interns will receive $200 for each watch during the internship Interns are not eligible for benefits or retirement Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required: Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) Valid U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certificate without engine rating restriction Ability to pass a DOT drug test Proof of future enrollment in or completion of a National Maritime Center (NMC) approved QMED
  • Oiler or Junior Engineer course Preferred Qualifications Completion of a QMED
  • Oiler or Junior Engineer course within the past six months from the proposed hiring date with 90 days of creditable engine-room sea time. Important Notes Internship Timeline June 29th, 2026
  • WSF Engine Internship training starts July 15th, 2026
