These duties should include the preparation of samples for test along with being able to competently perform the actual test. The Lab Tech Metallographer should be knowledgeable of general lab procedures and an expert in procedures in which they are certified to perform testing. The Lab Tech Metallographer should also be capable of performing some equipment preventative and lab cleanliness duties. Perform laboratory tests on various products using equipment for which employee has been trained and certified. Capability to read and understand instructions, procedures, routing sheets and other required documentation. Follow instructions and procedures to ensure that quality of work is met. Processes paperwork and ensures that routing sheets are complete and accurate. Maintains integrity of the product with its lot number so that no mixing of product occurs. Uses measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and other devices to verify specifications of product. Use mathematical skills as required to perform calculation necessary to the performance of required lab test. Prepare reports, technical documents on examination results and procedures Collaborate with engineers and other professionals to solve metallurgical problems This position reports to Laboratory Manager does not have direct reports. 18 years of age or older. Minimum of 5 years' experience as Metallographer or Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering or related field. Experience with metallographic preparation and examination techniques. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of industry standards and practices. Able to interpret Specifications and Blueprints. Employee must show an aptitude for lab work. A willingness to perform the physical functions required, handling parts and machinery. Attention to detail and precision in lab work. Mathematical skills i.e.: basics math, algebra and geometry. To conduct microscopic, macroscopic examinations, and other tests on fastener samples of metals and alloys for purposes of metallurgical control. The metallographer will determine conformance of products to specification requirements or in developing new or improved shop processes and production methods. Assist guidance laboratory personnel in preparing samples, such as polishing or etching, and designates area of sample where microscopic or macroscopic examination is to be made. Performs microscopic examinations on samples to determine metal characteristics, such as crystal structure, porosity, grain size and homogeneity Interprets findings and writes reports regarding findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Employee is required to stand and sit for long periods of time. Must be able to walk and lift or carry parts or other items weighing up to 40 pounds throughout the lab. Uses arms, hands, and fingers to operate measuring tools, computer and other equipment. Must have near vision to read, focus and adjust in performance duties. Must be examined and pass vision test. Primary work is done under laboratory conditions in a clean and climate-controlled environment. Noise level is moderate to high, due to machinery & tests being conducted. Employee may be exposed to chemicals, moving machinery or equipment requiring the use of personal protective equipment.Job Type:
