s first industrially scalable laser metal additive manufacturing solution. The company builds and operates advanced digital infrastructure that enables innovation, accelerates growth, and supports sustainability across aerospace, defense, medical, and other essential industries. Through vertically integrated capabilities, including scalable additive manufacturing and precision machining, VulcanForms delivers end-to-end production at scale by combining cutting-edge technology with proven industrial craftsmanship. About the
Role:
VulcanForms is seeking an NPI Quality Engineer to serve as a front-line investigator for non-conformances, material defects, and process variances across metal additive manufacturing and post-processing operations at its Devens, MA facility. Reporting to Quality Leadership, the NPI Quality Engineer will investigate failed builds, perform physical and metallurgical teardowns, collect statistical evidence, and drive initial root-cause containment so Engineering teams can implement permanent corrective actions. The successful candidate will combine hands-on failure analysis skills with strong problem-solving, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed physical, optical, and mechanical failure analysis on non-conforming metal additive builds, machined features, and subassemblies
- Respond promptly to line stoppages and non-conformances
- Lead immediate quarantine and containment actions
- Create and document non-conformance records with detailed photographic, dimensional, and fractographic evidence
- Work closely with Metallurgical and Metrology laboratories to coordinate tensile testing, density checks, sectioning, polishing, etching, microstructural reviews, CMM measurements, and optical scans
- Partner with Senior Quality Engineers and Metallurgists to execute structured 8D root-cause investigations
- Analyze laser parameters, powder lot history, thermal profiles, tool paths, and other process variables
- Serve as a key technical contributor on the Material Review Board
- Track defect trends and maintain non-conformance Pareto logs
- Present monthly failure-mode data and analysis to Engineering teams
- Review Device History Records, machine logs, and raw material certificates for failed lots
- Investigate batch-level and machine-level systemic variables
- Support continuous improvement and the development of permanent corrective actions
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience in quality engineering, failure analysis, metallurgical laboratory testing, or a related field within precision hardware or advanced manufacturing
- Bachelor?s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent hands-on experience may be considered
- Hands-on experience with basic failure analysis tools and techniques, including optical microscopy, fractography, hardness testing, sectioning, and polishing
- Knowledge of basic geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- Experience using structured root-cause methodologies, including 8D and 5-Why analysis
- Strong analytical, technical writing, documentation, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with Quality, Engineering, Metallurgy, Metrology, Manufacturing, and Operations teams
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple investigations in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Direct experience identifying metal additive manufacturing defect modes, including keyholing, lack-of-fusion porosity, delamination, and residual-stress cracking
- Hands-on experience with destructive mechanical testing of titanium or nickel al Active Filters
