This role will join a high-functioning team focused on weld processes, supply chain development, and supplier qualification for next-generation materials and components for sodium-cooled fast reactors . You will support weld development activities ranging from fundamental laboratory testing to manufacturing process development for advanced reactor components. A primary function of this role is applying metallurgical fundamentals and weld engineering requirements to inform manufacturing process development in collaboration with external suppliers. Responsibilities Partner with cross-functional project teams to provide welding configuration, geometry, and methods guidance supporting reactor development programs Develop weld designs, specifications, and processes to support reactor design and licensing using fundamental welding engineering principles Inform materials test programs to validate material/weld performance models and ensure testing aligns with Natrium reactor program objectives Perform scientific analysis of test data (e.g., metallography, NDE, mechanical properties, ductility) and generate technical reports Provide materials engineering support for procurement of engineered components/systems, including leading supplier technical development to increase technology readiness levels Required Qualifications BS + 3 years related experience, MS + 2 years , or equivalent experience Degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Welding Engineering , or related discipline (preferred) Experience with weld engineering for new design Experience defining weld geometries, methods, and property impacts for welded pipes, pressure vessels, and equipment Strong understanding of metallurgy, including welding and heat treatment of ferrous (austenitic / ferritic-martensitic steels) and nonferrous (nickel-base) alloys Ability to work with minimal direction and solve challenging problems High degree of trust and integrity; strong communication and teamwork skills Preferred Qualifications Working knowledge of ASME NQA-1 and ASME Section IX (highly desirable) Understanding of weld design/parameter impacts on complex mechanical phenomena (creep, fatigue, creep-fatigue, SCC, fracture) in high-temperature systems Experience qualifying welds for service in highly regulated applications
