The successful candidate will contribute to battery cathode materials synthesis and process development , including lithium-ion and emerging battery chemistries, while investigating relationships among material composition, crystal structure, processing, interfaces, mechanical properties, electrochemical behavior, and device-level performance. This position combines experimental materials development, powder synthesis, electrode fabrication, materials characterization, prototype fabrication, and failure analysis. Key Responsibilities Synthesize and optimize battery cathode materials , including lithium-ion cathode materials such as NMC and other advanced electrode materials. Develop and optimize synthesis processes such as co-precipitation, solid-state reaction, calcination, thermal treatment, doping, coating, and surface modification . Optimize material composition, crystal structure, particle morphology, microstructure, processing conditions, and interfacial properties. Prepare active-material powders, material samples, electrodes, films, membranes, coatings, and prototype components. Fabricate and evaluate battery electrodes and support coin-cell and pouch-cell testing to correlate materials properties with electrochemical performance. Conduct materials characterization and interpret structure-property-processing-performance relationships . Characterize cathode materials using techniques such as XRD, SEM/EDS, particle-size analysis, BET surface-area analysis, ICP, thermal analysis, and electrochemical testing. Evaluate adhesion, porosity, conductivity, mechanical integrity, thermal stability, electrochemical stability, and environmental durability. Support materials selection and process development for battery electrodes, device components, packaging, sealing, and manufacturing processes. Investigate material degradation, interfacial failure, contamination, compatibility issues, and electrochemical performance degradation. Work closely with chemical, battery, and mechanical engineers to integrate new materials into prototype cells and devices. Support scale-up of materials synthesis from laboratory development toward pilot-scale manufacturing. Develop material specifications, test methods, standard operating procedures, process-control methods, and quality-control criteria. Prepare technical reports, presentations, invention disclosures, publications, and project documentation. Qualifications B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering , or a related field. At least 2 years of relevant research or industrial experience preferred. Experience with battery materials synthesis, cathode materials, electrochemical materials, or electrode processing is strongly preferred. Hands-on experience with lithium-ion cathode materials such as NMC, LFP, LCO, high-nickel layered oxides, or other advanced cathode chemistries is highly desirable. Experience with powder synthesis methods such as co-precipitation, solid-state synthesis, calcination, milling, doping, coating, or thermal processing is desirable. Familiarity with characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, XRD, ICP, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, BET, particle-size analysis, porosimetry, or mechanical testing is preferred. Experience with electrode slurry preparation, coating, drying, calendaring, cell assembly, or electrochemical testing is a plus. Experience with functional materials, polymers, composites, ceramics, coatings, or interfaces is desirable. Strong experimental-design, analytical, problem-solving, and technical-writing skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary research and development environment. Experience with materials scale-up, pilot manufacturing, or technology transfer is a plus. Experience with government-funded research programs is a plus.
