Mechanical Engineer / Project Coordinator | Weapon Systems Demilitarization Redstone Arsenal, AL 35898 Full-time Full-time Overview The Demilitarization Mechanical Engineer / Project Coordinator supports the research, development, sustainment, and demilitarization of propellant and energetic materials for missile systems. The role combines engineering and project management to analyze and resolve technical and programmatic challenges, applying Earned Value Management (EVM), project planning, scheduling, and risk mitigation to ensure successful execution. The engineer contributes to the development and implementation of demilitarization processes and evaluates emerging technologies for the safe and efficient decommissioning of obsolete missiles and munitions. Additionally, the role supports Resource, Recovery, and Recycling (R3) and closed disposal initiatives by advancing technology integration, improving operational capability, ensuring environmental compliance, and reducing lifecycle costs. Location This position supports the U.S. Army DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center Technology Development Center at Redstone Arsenal, located near Huntsville, AL. Work environments may include office space, engineering laboratories, machine shops, fabrication facilities, and outdoor weapons test ranges supporting propulsion and weapon systems. Job Description The Demilitarization Mechanical Engineer / Project Coordinator is responsible for evaluating, interpreting, and documenting data across a range of propulsion and mechanical systems. This role involves using advanced software tools to analyze test data and predict propulsion system performance. The engineer designs, plans, and executes work on facilities, structures, and systems supporting tactical missile propulsion research, development, and demilitarization (demil). Working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, the engineer interprets technical requirements, operates system components, and maintains a safe, organized workspace while effectively communicating across teams. Responsibilities include rapid fabrication, test design, reverse engineering, static testing, data analysis, and technical reporting for propulsion and missile-related test articles. The engineer performs mechanical design, analysis, and fabrication support, including test fixture development using appropriate safety factors. The role requires producing detailed engineering drawings and technical data packages to support fabrication, assembly, and proof-of-concept testing. Responsibilities also include supporting system integration, setup, and testing across laboratory, manufacturing, and field environments. In the project coordination capacity, the engineer manages assigned efforts by balancing cost, schedule, scope, performance, quality, and delivery. This includes developing and maintaining project plans, schedules, work breakdown structures, cost estimates, milestones, and risk assessments. The engineer tracks progress against plans, ensures timely completion of tasks, and maintains compliance with technical requirements. Risks and issues are proactively identified, with mitigation strategies and corrective actions implemented as needed. The engineer gathers and interprets stakeholder requirements, defines technical scope, and develops execution strategies to address complex technical and operational challenges. Close coordination is required with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, safety, and customer stakeholders. The role also involves providing clear and timely status updates to leadership and external stakeholders, supporting closed disposal development, and advancing Resources, Recovery, and Recycling (R3) technologies. The engineer contributes to transitioning new technologies into operational demilitarization facilities and evaluates improvements to enhance reliability, reduce risk, lower lifecycle costs, and optimize throughput. This position requires strong technical expertise combined with disciplined project execution. The engineer is expected to maintain safe, organized workspaces and perform additional duties as needed to support mission objectives. Required Qualifications
