Job Description
A California-based MEP contractor with more man power across multiple business units is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer for its LA office. The team supports large-scale multifamily and commercial construction projects throughout California and is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who combines strong HVAC design fundamentals with practical construction coordination experience. This role is ideal for someone who understands how mechanical systems are designed, coordinated, and executed in real-world multifamily construction environments. The engineering group is collaborative, established, and highly team-oriented, so success in this role will require both technical ability and the communication skills to work effectively with project managers, field teams, BIM coordinators, architects, and other MEP disciplines. Carson, CA | Full-Time | $160,000-$200,000 What You'll Be Responsible For Lead HVAC and mechanical system design for multifamily residential construction projects from concept through construction documentation Design and coordinate ventilation, exhaust, hydronic heating and cooling, duct distribution, and HVAC systems Perform engineering calculations including heating and cooling load analysis, airflow balancing, psychrometric analysis, duct sizing, and equipment selection Prepare and review construction drawings, duct layouts, schedules, specifications, and technical documentation using Revit MEP and AutoCAD Coordinate directly with architects, general contractors, BIM teams, project managers, and other engineering disciplines throughout project execution Participate in BIM coordination and clash detection processes using Navisworks and Autodesk Construction Cloud Support construction administration efforts including RFIs, submittal reviews, shop drawing reviews, and field coordination Help troubleshoot design and coordination issues during active construction phases Apply California Mechanical Code, ASHRAE standards, Title 24 requirements, and local building codes to all project deliverables Support energy-efficient system design aligned with CALGreen, LEED, and California energy standards Conduct QA/QC reviews for mechanical drawings, calculations, and project documentation Mentor junior engineers, designers, and drafting staff while contributing to long-term team development Assist with improving BIM workflows, Revit standards, templates, and engineering documentation processes Manage multiple active projects while maintaining schedule, coordination quality, and technical accuracy
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program 3-6 years of mechanical building systems design experience Multifamily residential or mixed-use construction experience strongly preferred EIT certification required; active pursuit of PE licensure preferred Strong HVAC and mechanical systems design experience required Proficiency in Revit MEP and AutoCAD required Experience using HAP or Trace 700 for HVAC load calculations required Experience with Navisworks, Bluebeam, and BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud preferred Strong understanding of Title 24, California Mechanical Code, ASHRAE standards, and energy compliance requirements Ability to coordinate effectively with engineering teams, field personnel, contractors, and consultants Strong communication skills and the ability to work within an established, collaborative team environment Experience in design-build or integrated project delivery environments is a plus Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without future sponsorship The team is prioritizing candidates who are technically strong, reliable, collaborative, and interested in growing into larger project and leadership responsibilities over time.INDFM Pay:
