Our company manufactures products for public safety vehicles, and this position plays an important role in taking products from initial concept through design, prototyping, testing, production, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will have strong experience using SolidWorks to design complex sheet metal parts and assemblies, along with proficiency in SolidWorks PDM for file management, revision control, and engineering document organization. This role requires a practical understanding of fabrication methods and the ability to create accurate, cost-effective, and production-ready designs that align with existing manufacturing capabilities. This position also involves hands-on installation, test fitting, and evaluation of prototype products on vehicles using appropriate hand and power tools. Following successful validation, the Engineer will develop clear installation instructions and supporting technical documentation. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, test, and improve sheet metal products, components, assemblies, and manufacturing processes, with support for plastic components as needed. Create, review, and revise 3D models, complex assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings using SolidWorks. Apply sheet metal design best practices to develop products that are practical, cost-effective, manufacturable, and compatible with existing fabrication and production capabilities. Develop and maintain production-ready drawing packages, Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications, test reports, work instructions, installation instructions, and project records. Maintain accurate part, BOM, and manufacturing information within the MIE Trak MRP system. Manage engineering files, revisions, and document approvals using SolidWorks PDM. Support projects throughout the complete product-development cycle, including research, preliminary design, prototyping, testing, design revisions, documentation, and production implementation. Conduct engineering calculations, testing, and data analysis to support product development, design validation, and continuous improvement. Install and test-fit prototype products and components on vehicles to verify fit, function, performance, compatibility, and ease of installation. Develop clear and accurate installation instructions based on the approved and validated installation process. Collaborate with engineering, production, quality, purchasing, and other departments to ensure design, manufacturing, quality, and project requirements are met. Investigate product and production issues, determine root causes, and develop practical corrective solutions. Evaluate materials, components, hardware, tools, and manufacturing methods for sheet metal and plastic applications. Provide technical support to production teams regarding drawings, fabrication methods, assembly concerns, equipment needs, and process improvements. Monitor project schedules, priorities, and deliverables and communicate progress to relevant team members. Ensure engineering work complies with applicable safety, quality, performance, manufacturing, and documentation requirements. Maintain accurate engineering files, project records, tools, equipment, and work areas in accordance with company standards. Travel occasionally to support field installations, product evaluations, customer or project-related activities, trade shows, demonstrations, and industry events. Qualifications Minimum of five years of experience in sheet metal design using SolidWorks. Strong knowledge of sheet metal design best practices, fabrication methods, materials, and design for manufacturability. Experience creating complex, multi-level assemblies and detailed production drawings. Proficiency in SolidWorks PDM, including file management and revision control. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Hands-on experience with sheet metal fabrication machinery, hand tools, and power tools is highly desirable. Familiarity with ERP or MRP systems; experience with MIE Trak is a plus. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities. High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with engineering, production, quality, purchasing, and other cross-functional teams. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Associate degree in Engineering, Mechanical Design, Drafting, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered. Interview Requirements Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to present sample drawings or a portfolio demonstrating relevant sheet metal design experience. A SolidWorks proficiency assessment will also be conducted as part of the interview process. Join Our Team Join our engineering team and apply your sheet metal design experience to products used in public safety vehicles. You will contribute throughout the complete product-development process while collaborating with experienced professionals in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
