Job Description

Mechanical Engineer/Consultant Instawork - 3.3 Mountain View, CA Job Details Temporary | Part-time | Contract $59 - $60 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Mechanical assembly Machine design Electrical wiring 3D printing Fusion 360 Full Job Description Job Description We're looking for nimble, hands-on Mechanical Engineers In-Industry or current Masters/PhD students to join Instawork's AI Robotics Lab for a specialized, short-term prototyping sprint. If you enjoy taking an open-source hardware guide (like the UMI-FT robotic interface), 3D printing the parts, wiring it up, and then hacking the CAD to make it do something new, this project is for you. We're not building rocket engines or mass-market car chassis, so heavy-industry experience isn't what we need. We operate in the fast-paced world of consumer electronics, wearables, and robotics. Your mission over the next few weeks is pure proof-of-concept: helping us prove an idea can work in the physical world. Design for Manufacturing is a problem for tomorrow. These shifts are about making it real today. What You'll Do •
Rapid Prototyping:
Run point on the mechanical design and physical assembly of early-stage prototypes, heavily utilizing our 3D printers. •
Adapt & Hack:
Read through academic or open-source hardware documentation, build the baseline designs, and modify the CAD to fit our custom, real-world use cases. • Iterate on the
Fly:
Design custom enclosures, mounts, and mechanisms optimized for rapid additive manufacturing, working quickly with basic plastics and metals. •
Hands-On Assembly:
Work alongside our team to physically integrate sensors, PCBs, and actuators into tight, wearable, or robotic form factors. What We're Looking For •
Exceptional CAD Skills:
Highly proficient in Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Onshape, with a specific superpower in designing for 3D printing. •
The Right Background:
Experience in consumer electronics, robotics, or wearables. You should be comfortable designing small, tightly integrated systems. • The "0-to-1"
Mindset:
You value speed, agility, and functional iteration over perfectly documented release cycles. •
Tinkerer's Aptitude:
You are completely comfortable running 3D printers, handling basic wiring/soldering, and using standard hand tools to force a prototype across the finish line before your shift ends. •
No DFM Required:
You know how to design for scale, but have the discipline not to waste time doing it during this proof-of-concept phase. Bonus Points • Industrial Design sensibility: You have an eye for aesthetics and ergonomics, making sure our prototypes don't just function, but feel right in a user's hands.
Pay:
$59.00 - $60.00 per hour
Work Location:
In person
