Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience. 10 years of experience with mechanical infrastructure systems and researching merging technologies. Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), energy modeling software, hydraulic analysis, thermal digital twins, Google Product Suite. Experience with design, commissioning, and testing of thea cooling/heating/power generation systems. Experience leveraging test data to validate and optimize mechanical systems.
Preferred qualifications:
PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a Professional Engineering (PE) license. Experience with thermal analysis and data center cooling systems. Experience in innovating and developing advanced thermal system models in mission critical applications. Experience creating data center thermal digital twins. The Thermal Systems Engineering team stands at the forefront of accelerating innovation that powers Google's global infrastructure. As a Mechanical Research Engineer on the Data Center Technology Systems (DCTS), a multidisciplinary group of engineers and architects dedicated to designing next-generation data centers, you will play a key role in developing, analyzing, and optimizing the mechanical cooling infrastructure. You will use various analytical tools to reveal important data points in the design process for efficient mechanical systems. You will be an excellent communicator, able to articulate complex ideas concisely across all digital mediums and provide recommendations to cross-functional engineers and architects to enhance our data centers' mechanical systems and accelerate construction. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $171,000-$248,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities Develop chip-to-chiller steady-state and transient models to optimize performance and predict complex failure modes through system-level energy and failure analyses. Investigate and innovate next-generation mechanical systems and emerging cooling technologies using thermodynamic principles to align with the strategic company objectives Create system-level concepts and schematic designs while guiding technology engagement through cross-functional collaboration with Engineering and Operations teams. Perform evaluations factoring in Capital Expenditure (Capex), utility consumption to vet proposals from internal innovators, research institutes, and external suppliers. Author technical documentation and white papers to present research findings to leadership, ensuring infrastructure is optimized for the evolving demands of the machine learning fleet.
