Shift:
First Shift Job Summary:

Design new products and enhance/improve current products. Work directly with mechanical and electrical engineers, technicians, manufacturing, and quality functions.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Apply mechanical engineering skills to design, develop, analyze, and test all mechanical aspects of portable electronics equipment. Generate 3D CAD designs and 2D drawings utilizing Solidworks. Tackles the most challenging, high-level technical issues, often with company-wide impact. Drives innovation and sets long-term technical vision. Proactively communicates issues and drives resolution through efficient troubleshooting. Shapes the technical strategy for large portions of the company. Leads by influencing and inspiring teams, contributing to high-level decisions at the executive level. Coordinates and aligns multiple teams or departments to implement technical strategies. Works with senior leadership to align technical initiatives with business goals. Takes responsibility for the success of large-scale projects, often with significant organizational impact. Ensures the organization is adopting the most appropriate technologies and processes. Coordinates efforts across the team and maintains accountability for task completion dates. Communicates complex technical concepts to executives and other stakeholders. Acts as a liaison between technical and non-technical teams. Mentors and actively drives the technical skills of the team. Possess deep technical and industry knowledge. Be the subject matter expert on multiple relevant topics. As an individual contributor, meet project objectives with innovation, creativity and good engineering practice. Design new, innovative products and drive enhancements/improvements to current products. Seek new and better technologies and methods to increase product performance, add features and reduce component and production costs. When appropriate, putting in additional hours to meet project deadlines and stay off the critical path. Create and maintain detailed drawings of designs and assemblies per document control standards. Effectively use AMS's Product Development Process and industry standard product development methodologies and design tools. This includes producing and maintaining the following: tolerance analysis, design analysis, Product Requirements Document, product architectures, high-level design strategies, detailed designs, design revision control, and product verification testing. Generation of technical documentation in support of Product Development Process deliverables such as protocols, reports and Change Control documentation. Design reviews are conducted throughout the product development process. Participate in the continuous improvement of engineering practices and procedures. Specify and perform design validation testing. Be a key player in bringing design concepts from concept through prototyping, testing, and implementation. Utilize Rapid Prototyping techniques to create mock-ups of products to be used by Marketing and Sales to validate market requirements. Provide marketing support, which includes providing technical evaluations and determining project development and product cost estimates for new product ideas. Provide support to Production, which includes making design changes to improve manufacturability as appropriate, reduce product build costs and component cost as well as support the selection and qualifying of vendors/suppliers. Also, participate in failure analysis/investigations to find the root-cause of production and field failures and, if appropriate, make design changes. Be familiar with domestic and international Regulatory Standards;

UL, CE, ISO, IPC, ANSI

Y14.5M, etc. Support testing to these standards and getting certifications as appropriate. Be knowledgeable of the relevant standards and include them in the Product Requirements Document. Continuously improve skills required by seeking training through seminars, literature, industry shows/workshops and relevant course work. #

Experience and Skills:
Skills/Abilities:

Must be a current user of Solidworks CAD software. FEA software experience highly desirable. Familiarity with PDM Vault CAD data management is a plus. Extensive experience with injection molded plastic part design. GD&T is a plus. Direct experience with complex assembly design and electrical component integration. Strong experience with tolerance analysis of complex assemblies. Ability to complete entire projects with minimal supervision, complete assigned tasks in a timely manner, and learn new principles, ideas, and concepts. Hands-on failure analysis and process troubleshooting. Ability to determine root-cause failure modes and distinguish between process and design issues. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work on multiple projects. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, at all organizational levels. A demonstrated interest in continuing education in relevant technology areas. Extensive product design background including portable electronics devices and/or medical devices, consumer electronic devices. Fluency in mechanical engineering principles used in design, including thermodynamics, mechanics, materials science, and fluid mechanics. Design of Experiments, basic statistics, and experience with design verification and reliability testing. Minitab experience is a plus. Direct experience in designing parts using a variety of techniques and materials. Ability to work effectively in an indoor office environment, communicate and receive information with other team members effectively both verbally and using written reports and documents. The ability to work with a personal computer and with various small tools and shop equipment is expected. Travel may be required occasionally and could include international travel of up to two weeks at a time and may account for 10-15% of the individual's time.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering 20+ years of progressive project responsibilities, ownership, and scope. Experience using formal Product Development Processes (Stage-Gate). Physical Requirements (With or without reasonable accommodation):
