Since 1980, Westell has been a leading provider of high-performance network infrastructure solutions, focused on expanding reliable communication networks through collaborative innovation. Through three business segments, Westell designs, manufactures, and distributes products used primarily by communications service providers, tower operators, and enterprises deploying in-building wireless and public safety communications systems.
SUMMARY:
Westell is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our product design team in its Aurora, Illinois headquarters. This position will be responsible to design, develop, document, test and debug products - from concept to engineering release - involving all Westell product lines including our outside plant cabinet, cabinet system integration, IBW, and ISM product lines. You'll be responsible for the entire mechanical product design and will need to collaborate with other mechanical, electrical, system or software engineers in the planning, design, and development of a variety of end products. The position is full-time and onsite in Aurora. The ideal candidate will have proven cross-functional team experience working with local and remote teams. The candidate will develop significant new products and see their new products come to market. Join a company where you can be a product development leader and not just one of the crowd.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Mechanical engineering leadership in cross functional development teams
  • Define, design, and launch new products
  • Work with customers to develop products that meet their needs
  • Provide leadership in supporting products for the entire product life cycle
  • Identify new technologies and technical partners to successfully bring products to market
  • Productize designs developed internally or externally (including generating bills of materials, part specifications, test specifications, fabrication drawings, etc.)
  • Direct testing and evaluation of internally and externally developed designs/products
  • Generation of technical documentation including requirements and test specifications
  • Act as a product expert providing technical support for sales and marketing activities
  • Evaluate existing designs for performance cost and quality improvements
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
  • 5+ years of applied mechanical design skills
  • Sheet metal, plastics, and printed circuit board design for electro-mechanical products
  • Experience with mechanical CAD, SolidWorks a plus
  • Experience with PDM and BOM management, Agile PLM a plus
  • CFD simulation tool experience a plus
  • 3+ years of experience working with worldwide suppliers
  • Strong communication and leadership skills working in cross functional teams
