Job Description
Summary We're looking for an experienced engineer who is motivated to continue improving the world's first robotic track inspection vehicle and who is passionate about solving complex transportation problems. RailPod believes that teamwork is the primary factor in our success, and we are seeking individuals that thrive in a team environment. Our challenges cover the full range of industrial machine design from large weldments to sensor fusion. This is a unique opportunity to work on hardware that will propel a two-ton robotic-vehicle on rails, as well as help save lives and reduce the cost of shipping by rail. You will have the opportunity to make an impact not only on the robot, but on the world. You will work with a diverse team that consists of software, electrical, and mechanical engineers. We offer the opportunity to deploy and test the robot in the field as well as on our 70' indoor test track. You will work with experienced mechanical engineers on systems such as: hybrid diesel-electric drive, road and rail suspension, hydraulics, disc brakes, and lift mechanisms that support thousands of pounds. Roles & Responsibilities Mechanical design using SolidWorks involving electronics and optical sensors packaging. Design of sheet metal, large weldments, and precision machined components. Structural analysis of weldments and bolted assemblies including shock, vibration, and fatigue. Mentoring of junior engineers in use and application of project management tools, including writing solid performance specifications and conducting FMEA at suitable design stages. Minimum Requirements BSME or equivalent with 5-10 years of applicable experience. Experience in lieu of a degree will be considered. Experience with 3D solid modeling for CAD. SolidWorks preferred. Solid knowledge of applying
ASME Y14.5 GD&T
to production quality drawings. Experience using PDM systems, proper application of revision control, and BOM maintenance. 2-3 years experience designing medium scale capital equipment for low rate manufacturing. Demonstrable experience with design for manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability. Experience with designing for lean manufacturing preferred. 2-3 years experience designing machine frame weldments.Desired Experience:
2-3 years experience packaging electronics for high vibration, harsh environment operation. Experience applying and packaging optical sensors Experience performing static and dynamic structural analysis using hand calculations and FEA. Experience designing for railroad rolling stock. Experience writing and maintaining company engineering standards.
