General Profile:
Requires specialized depth and breadth of mechanical engineering expertise with strong application in cost, supply chain, and product lifecycle optimization. Interprets internal and external business drivers—including cost, supply risk, and manufacturability—and translates them into actionable engineering solutions. Solves complex, cross-functional problems by balancing design intent, cost, quality, and supply chain realities. Takes a systems-level perspective to identify innovative, value-driven solutions. Works independently with limited guidance, often leading cross-functional initiatives or projects. Influences stakeholders across Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, and external suppliers.
Role Responsibilities:
- Identify, analyze, and resolve complex mechanical, manufacturing, and supply chain challenges with a strong emphasis on cost reduction, supply resilience, and product robustness
- Lead or execute value engineering initiatives, including cost reduction (CR), multi-sourcing, supplier transitions, and design optimization efforts
- Partner closely with strategic suppliers to develop, qualify, and optimize components, ensuring alignment to cost, quality, and capacity requirements
- Drive Design for Cost (DfC), Design for Manufacturability (DfM), and Design for Supply Chain (DfSC) principles across existing products and new product introductions
- Develop, modify, and optimize engineering designs, specifications, and drawings with a focus on total cost, standardization, and scalability
- Support and lead ECO evaluation and execution, ensuring optimized cut-in strategies that balance cost, risk, and operational impact
- Own or contribute to NPI cost evaluation and transition activities, ensuring designs meet cost targets before release and during ramp
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Supply Chain, Program Management, and Manufacturing teams to identify and execute value improvement opportunities across modules and systems
- Perform and guide engineering analysis, testing, and validation to ensure proposed solutions meet design, reliability, and performance requirements
- Generate clear technical documentation, including specifications, cost models, test plans, and engineering reports
- Communicate complex technical and business trade-offs effectively and influence decision-making across multiple stakeholders
- Contribute to value tracking metrics (e.
g., cost savings, PPV, value leakage) and support ongoing pipeline generation of value opportunities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 7-10 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in semiconductor equipment or complex capital systems
- Strong expertise in CAD, GD&T, materials, manufacturing processes, and mechanical design fundamentals
- Demonstrated experience applying Design for Excellence (DfX) methodologies with emphasis on cost and manufacturability
- Proven ability to work across functions and interface with suppliers on technical and cost-related topics
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in value engineering, cost reduction, or supply chain engineering environments
- Knowledge of Applied Materials / Varian product lifecycle, including
NPI, ECO
processes, and supplier engagement
- Experience with multi-sourcing, should-cost modeling, and supplier negotiations/technical alignment
- Familiarity with semiconductor equipment modules, subsystems, and high-reliability mechanical designs
- Strong business acumen with an ability to translate engineering decisions into cost and operational impact
