DESCRIPTION
The Mechanical Engineer designs automated packaging platforms and supporting systems to enable faster and more efficient delivery to Amazon's customers. The primary role of the Mechanical Engineer is to provide technical ownership and refinement of the packaging platforms and automation systems. Working with the Electrical and Controls teams, the Mechanical Engineer will execute the design and manufacturing of Amazon's in-house packaging machinery and automation. Key job responsibilities Collaborate with cross-functional engineers to design and execute packaging machinery and automation projects Collaborate in the mechanical design work-streams, including modeling, load/bearing calculations, and 3D/2D design Ensure project documentation is complete and scalable for manufacturing Support safety certification of projects/platforms Participate in meetings to optimize for customer experience, supply chain, and sustainability About the team Our Hardware Development Engineering team operates in a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment working alongside software engineers, controls engineers, data scientists, reliability engineers, and operations teams. We focus on the design, prototyping, and development of packaging automation systems — from early concept through production-ready integrated systems — ensuring they meet customer experience, safety, regulatory, and business requirements before deployment. Our work spans the entire product development lifecycle — from concept generation and design down-selection through continuous improvement of deployed systems across hundreds of fulfillment centers in North America and Europe. What sets our team apart is our hands-on approach to solving complex technical challenges. We design and build custom mechanisms, develop novel automation solutions, create robust mechanical and electromechanical systems, and work directly in lab environments and fulfillment centers to bring our designs from prototype to production at scale. Our contributions directly impact Amazon's sustainability goals, operational efficiency, and the customer experience for millions of packages shipped daily.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
4+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience Experience with prototyping and implementation Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures BA in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering 4+ years packaging machinery development experience Proven experience in advanced motion control platforms including but not limited to linear drives, high axis count servo platforms, and robotics Proficiency in 3D design and simulation software
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of SolidWorks simulation or Ansys Finite Element analysis tools Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume 4+ years packaging machinery design experience Knowledge of packaging machinery safety standards Operations and packaging materials/supply chain experience Advanced simulation and controls programming expertise Knowledge of the patent processes Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
