Automation Engineer
Job Title:
Automation EngineerJob DescriptionThis role is responsible for managing current automation initiatives and designs related to material movement. The engineer will oversee the design and implementation of automation projects executed by third-party vendors, translating requirements and specifications into clear concepts and directions for these partners. The role provides design engineering support to a fuel production facility from research and development to system design, installation, testing, and maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Create designs for various process support systems including chemical, piping, HVAC, ventilation, structural, electro-mechanical, automation, and robotics.
  • Perform load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection, and layout of ductwork, piping, and facility ventilation.
  • Support process, facility design, and fuel development teams.
  • Create and document engineering designs, including requirements, specifications, mechanical drawings, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and engineering calculations.
  • Conduct energy modeling, simulations, and engineering calculations to enhance efficiency and sustainability, ensuring all designs meet regulatory and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with design teams to ensure seamless integration of HVAC and other mechanical systems into the overall building design.
  • Work with contractors to clarify design intent, resolve technical issues, and provide solutions to site challenges.
  • Select and order parts for process systems like motors, drives, sensors, pumps, and valves.
  • Assemble parts to build prototype designs.
  • Operate process equipment to perform design verification and validation and conduct quality assurance checks and site inspections to verify work compliance.
  • Perform design engineering activities to support fuel manufacturing such as reliability, maintenance, process improvement, failure analysis, and cost estimation.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and maintenance plans for process equipment and support systems.
  • Participate in teams to develop standardized engineering workflows and documentation.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and behavior in all forms of communication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Essential Skills
  • Experience in designing, managing, or running automation projects specifically in regards to material movement.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, chemical, or nuclear engineering from a program accredited by the
ABET EAC.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and/or chemical engineering concepts, including design, manufacture, installation, assembly, and operation of equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing facility design, including lean manufacturing approaches.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards pertinent to mechanical and/or process designs.
  • Proficiency in 2D/3D engineering and manufacturing tools, such as AutoCAD, Revit, Carrier HAP, or TRACE.
  • CAD and P&ID experience.
  • Experience with facility design, construction, and operation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
    Level II:
    Typically three years of experience in an engineering role, including machine, process, or facility design and assembly.
      Level III:
      Typically five years of experience in an engineering role, including machine, process, or facility design and assembly.
      • A master's degree in engineering or related field may be considered in lieu of two years of experience.
      • A Ph.D. in engineering or related field may be considered in lieu of three years of experience.
      • Previous experience exceeding performance standards may be considered in lieu of years of experience.
      Work EnvironmentOn-site office environment. The position offers 3 weeks of paid time off and 11 holidays.

      Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Greenbelt, MD.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.00 - $80.00/hr.
