The Role Design Release Engineer - External Rearview Mirrors At this level you are expected to operate with a high level of independent discernment and are typically responsible for implementing functional strategy, administering and coordinating programs, counseling and advising management. As a fully-qualified individual contributor who has thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the function, you will provide expert judgment and analysis for the design, development and implementation of technical products and systems. Resolve highly complex technical issues and conducts advanced research. Recommend alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures. Skilled and proficient with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Rely mostly on extensive personal experience and discernment to plan and accomplish goals. You will perform multiple tasks. Lead and likely direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Own the design, release, and lifecycle management of exterior and interior mirror components and assemblies (OSRVM, ISRVM, where applicable). Ensure mirror designs meet functional, quality, cost, timing, and regulatory requirements (FMV111, ECE
R46, GSO, GB
) for all assigned programs. Provide engineering leadership at the component level. Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) Engineering degree (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or similar). Familiarity with vehicle integration and body exterior systems. Training or familiarity with mirror-related regulatory requirements (FMVSS 111, ECE
R46, GSO, GB
) preferred. Training in DFMEA/PFMEA, DFSS, and structured problem solving preferred. Ability to interpret system requirements, testing, and regulatory needs and flow them down into component-level specifications. Working knowledge of
OSRVM/ISRVM
hardware. Able to create and maintain drawings, BOMs, and specifications. Strong skills in supplier technical interface, issue resolution, and engineering change management. Ability to support validation planning and confirm that supplier and GM test evidence meet program and regulatory expectations. Solid communication and collaboration skills across design, validation, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams. Self-directed, organized, and able to manage multiple programs and change content concurrently. What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities) Mirror Component Design & Release Own design and release of mirror components and assemblies (e.g., glass, carrier, actuator, housing, bezels, brackets, wiring interfaces) for assigned programs. Coordinate engineering changes (ECRs, ECNs) to support design updates, cost reductions, quality fixes, and regulatory-driven changes. Ensure released content supports manufacturability, serviceability, and quality objectives. Requirements, Regulatory, Translate system-level requirements into component-level requirements and drawing notes. Confirm that mirror designs enable compliance to
FMVSS 111, ECE
R46, CMVSS, GSO, GB, and any program-specific regulatory strategies. Document key regulatory-relevant attributes in drawings and supporting documents as required. Supplier Technical Interface & Execution Act as the primary technical contact for assigned mirror suppliers on design and release topics. Communicate GM requirements, timing, and change content clearly to suppliers and track responses. Review supplier drawings, DFMEAs, DVPs, and evaluation reports to ensure alignment with GM requirements and TS guidance. Support design reviews, build events, and PPAP/launch readiness with suppliers and internal teams. Validation Support & Issue Resolution Support validation teams by providing component details, drawings, and configuration information needed for testing. Confirm that the correct parts and configurations are used in mirror-related validation and regulatory testing. Ensure that design changes are captured in drawings, BOMs, and ECRs and are traceable to validation and regulatory evidence. Vehicle Integration & Cross-Functional Collaboration Work with body, doors, electrical architecture, vision/ADAS, thermal, NVH, safety, and manufacturing to ensure the mirror design fits packaging, interfaces, and performance needs. Provide mirror content input to DFMEA, PFMEA, build issues lists, and launch readiness reviews. Continuous Improvement & Documentation Discipline Maintain clean, current release data (drawings, parts lists, change history) for all assigned mirror content. Capture and apply lessons learned across programs (e.g., known supplier issues, design do's and don'ts, best practices). GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.
