The Project Engineer oversees new product designs or revisions to existing products produced by Peterson. The Project Engineer interacts and integrates technical activities on assigned projects with Purchasing, Production, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing Engineering and other related departments and vendors. The engineer is to ensure that products are designed and produced to meet the product requirements with respect to cost, quality, and timing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Analyze and comprehend system requirements and product needs from drawings, specifications and detail information supplied. Develop a project plan by reviewing project requirements, organizing, coordinating, and executing the plan. Develop project/product cost and timing as required to meet the product requirements. Prepares project status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and recommending actions. Directing the work of project personnel assigned to the engineer. Problem solving using root cause analysis and suggest recommended actions. Coordinate testing, either internally or through external test labs, as required by DOT, required as part of R D, or requested by the customer. Provide leadership to Design Engineers I & II as needed per project team requirements Diagnose problems or malfunctions within electromechanical systems and recommend solutions. Modify existing hardware designs or create new hardware to realize the desired operational and performance requirements. Evaluate and investigate products and recommend repair or design modifications based on requirements, cost, company resources, and capabilities. Use technical and engineering understanding to perform the necessary analysis, simulation, and verification of analog and digital hardware and firmware. Direct and execute collaboration with internal and external engineers to define and implement firmware, communication networks, electrical schematics, and layouts. Develop, oversee, and manage test specifications and their execution. Work with and thoroughly support manufacturing teams to release hardware designs into production. Represent the employer at customer meetings to explain or defend technical findings and recommendations. Design and coordinate fabrication and configuration of laboratory test equipment for hardware testing. Lead DFMEA, and DVP&R development processes. Use reliability and quality tools to assess hardware designs. Product supervision in the lab during prototype builds, tests, troubleshoot, or teardown throughout the product development and validation. Work with supply chain personnel to develop and evaluate external vendors, and to identify alternative parts in support of supply issues and obsolescence concerns.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Interface with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, customers, and vendors to discuss potential new products and modify existing designs. Skilled in the application of Design Engineering principles to specific products/processes. Must have the ability to work on project teams as the technical representative and have excellent communication skills. Create and strive towards a positive work environment by demonstrating and sharing functional and technical knowledge. An inquisitive attitude, good mechanical aptitude, and strong self- starter Understanding of analog and digital hardware as applied to automotive control systems Understanding of EMC specifications and EMC mitigation techniques Proficient in using laboratory test equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers Must have above average written and verbal communication skills within multiple levels of the organization Ability to read and make electrical schematics and engineering drawings Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project) Ability to coordinate engineering development with individuals in multiple locations / time zones
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS B.S.
in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, or equivalent, with course focus on power electronics, circuits, and systems. Preferred 1-3 years of product development experience. Ability to lead projects with minimal oversight. Python Experience (Automate repetitive tasks, analyze data, work within larger testing frameworks) Experience working with communication protocols (CAN, LIN, RS-232, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, Ethernet). Use of Vector CAN toolchain is highly desirable.
ENVIRONMENT
Duties are performed out of Peterson Manufacturing's offices and manufacturing faciliti Must be able to remain in a stationary position up to 50% of the time and be able to occasionally move about inside the office and manufacturing facilities Must be able to communicate with others (internal and external) and must be able to exchange accurate information in all situations EOE/M/F/Vet/Disability Employer.
