Job Description
Engineering Equipment Operator Department of the Interior U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Western Montana NWR Complex Summary You will serve as a Engineering Equipment Operator for the Western Montana NWR Complex. The primary purpose of this position is to operate gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction heavy equipment to complete a variety of Service Projects at various locations. This job is open to The public U.S. Citizens, Nationals or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL) Federal employees whose job, agency or department was eliminated and are eligible for priority over other applicants. Duties Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Operate a variety of types of heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth Heavy equipment may include bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheeled and tracked loaders, and specialized equipment.
Operates motor vehicles including:
tractor trailers, truck and trailer combination, stake trucks, and dump trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 pounds. Performs maintenance on motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and small equipment. Maintain, repair, or construct a variety of infrastructure including but not limited to: fences, water control structures, and buildings. Work includes developing a course of action to manage and complete small to medium, land management and earth moving projects and facility maintenance. Operators oversee job site safety and logistics. Operators must remain constantly alert and operate the equipment and machinery safely and carefully to prevent injuries or damage to self, others, or the equipment. Other Duties As Assigned- Assignments will be reasonably related to the employee's job description.

Heavy physical effort is used in the operation and adjustment of the equipment and attachments and in the performance of maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jolting received from operation of the equipment over rough surfaces. Location of the controls and attachments frequently require work in awkward or strained positions. Considerable energy is needed working in small confined spaces or elevated areas, and operating equipment over rough surfaces. Work normally requires extensive standing, walking, kneeling and bending. Lifts, carries and sets up, parts, equipment and objects or loads up to 50 pounds, unassisted, and up to 100 pounds with assistance.Working Conditions:
Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%). Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, electricity, dust, grease, dirt, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Caution must be exercised in working around water or wet soil. Work performed outside is in a variety of settings where steep terrain, extremely uneven, rocky and slippery footing is normal. Temperature extremes are common. Work is regularly exposed to the possibility of shock, cuts, scrapes, and bruises, falls, falling material, or injury from equipment associated with power equipment or hazardous materials. Work demands conformance to safety requirements including the use of a variety of personal protective equipment such as: protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel toe heavy leather boots, respirator, and other personal protective items. Serious injury may result from getting caught in operating equipment, or from collisions with automobiles when operating on or near public roads.
