The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices. Role Purpose

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will work directly with engineers to learn manufacturing processes, equipment systems, and mechanical engineering practices while supporting projects within the engineering team. This role offers hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment and includes formal project reviews presented to division leadership. The intern will also gain exposure to manufacturing and mechanical engineering terminology and processes, including production equipment, tooling, fixtures, process parameters, mechanical system performance, yield, defects, equipment reliability, and basic troubleshooting methods used in a manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities Support projects within the engineering and manufacturing departments

Work closely with engineers to develop an understanding of mechanical systems, manufacturing processes, and production equipment

Interact daily with plant operations teams in production and equipment areas

Assist with equipment run reviews, process monitoring, data collection, and documentation of observations or improvement opportunities

Assist with process- and equipment-related experiments designed to build fundamental understanding of mechanical or manufacturing problems

Participate in the planning, execution, and evaluation phases of engineering activities

Analyze data and provide support for process improvement, equipment performance, and reliability efforts

Prepare and deliver updates and formal presentations to engineering and leadership teams

Experiences/Education Currently pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree

Rising Junior or Senior status preferred

Required Skills Motivated self-starter with an independent learning style

Basic understanding of manufacturing environments, mechanical systems, process flow, or production support systems

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Experience with data analysis, including Microsoft Excel and SPC rules

Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment and contribute as an individual

Desired Skills Exposure to or interest in manufacturing equipment, tooling, fixtures, automation, process controls, mechanical design, or manufacturing troubleshooting

Strong mechanical engineering and quantitative problem-solving skills

Coursework in engineering statistics or other statistical training

Technical writing skills

Ability to deliver technical presentations to operators, engineers, and managers

Innovative, technically curious, and results-oriented

High level of commitment and accountability This position does not support immigration sponsorship. ​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
