As the operator of the NSF National Geophysical Facility, EarthScope provides cutting-edge infrastructure, data, and support to the geoscience community. The consortium collaborates with researchers, educators, and partners worldwide to improve understanding of Earth processes and natural hazards. Team members contribute to mission-driven work that supports open science, innovation, and community engagement in geophysics. Role Description The Engineer II - Polar is a full-time, on-site role based in Socorro, NM. This position supports the design, deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of geophysical instrumentation and systems used in polar and remote environments. Daily responsibilities may include preparing equipment for field campaigns, performing laboratory and bench testing, calibrating instruments, and documenting procedures and technical findings. The engineer collaborates with scientists, technical staff, and field personnel to ensure reliable data collection and system performance, and assists with logistics planning, safety preparations, and post-field analysis. The role also involves contributing to continuous improvement of engineering processes, adherence to applicable standards, and support for educational and outreach activities related to EarthScope's polar programs. Qualifications Demonstrated skills in engineering design, testing, and troubleshooting of electronic or mechanical systems for scientific or technical applications. Experience with data acquisition systems, instrumentation setup, and integration of sensors and related hardware. Ability to perform structured technical documentation, including procedures, schematics, and system configuration records. Experience working in field or remote environments, with an emphasis on safety, logistics planning, and equipment reliability. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with attention to detail and quality. Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams. Bachelor's degree in engineering, geophysics, physics, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Comfort with using common engineering and office software tools; familiarity with geophysical or environmental monitoring systems is a plus. Ability to meet the physical and travel requirements of occasional fieldwork, including work in challenging climates.
