Job Description
Seeking one motivated MS engineering student to support a research project on real-time refractory thickness measurement using thermal sensing, inverse heat-conduction model, and 3D Multiphysics digital-twin validation. The project aims to develop and validate a non-invasive, in-operation method for estimating remaining fused-cast AZS refractory thickness from external shell-temperature measurements. Career Readiness Competencies Present ideas or updates in a clear and organized manner. Analyze problems and propose practical solutions. Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and follow through. Follow instructions, meet deadlines, and deliver quality work. Use technology to organize, track, or present information clearly. Develop and refine a multilayer thermal-resistance and inverse heat-conduction model for refractory thickness estimation. Develop and run #D Multiphysics thermal simulations to validate and calibrate the analytical model. Conduct parametric and sensitivity studies involving refractory thickness, thermal conductivity, convection, emissivity, and operating temperatures. Analyze thermocouple and/or infrared (IR) shell-temperature data and compare model predictions with available furnace inspection or rebuild data. Evaluate refractory wear rate, remaining thickness, and remaining service life trends. Perform data analysis, visualization, uncertainty evaluation, and interpretation of model results. Assist in preparing technical reports, presentations, publications, and project documentation. MS student in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with Excel, MATLAB, Python for engineering calculations and data analysis. Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and document technical work clearly.
