Principal Mechanical Engineer -
Englewood, CO Type:
Contract (1-2 years with a high likelihood to extend or convert)Pay Range:
$70-101/hr. (DOE) - no Per Diem offeredSchedule:
Hybrid - 3 days in office (T, W, Th), every other Friday off Overview- The Principal Mechanical Engineer is a senior technical leader responsible for the design, specification, and delivery of mechanical systems within EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects, or traditional O&G or Hydro Power project experience.
- This role focuses heavily on rotating equipment, pressure vessels, and other major mechanical equipment, ensuring designs meet project requirements, industry standards, and client expectations. The position also plays a key role in cross-functional coordination.
- This position will interact with/support clients so excellent communication and articulation skills are required.
- Focus is on heavy rotating equipment, pumps, compressors, turbines, and anything that is "moving", to include pipe stress analysis and designs.
- Will work closely with piping, structural, and some process engineering teams, with projects focused on refinery and other pipeline projects. Key Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical engineering scope for EPC projects from concept through execution
- Design, specify, and review rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, turbines), pressure vessels and other major mechanical equipment
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (ASME, API, etc.)
- Collaborate closely with process engineering to understand operating conditions and translate them into mechanical design requirements
- Interface effectively with other mechanical engineers and multidisciplinary teams (process, piping, electrical, project management)
- Review vendor drawings, datasheets, and technical bids for accuracy and compliance
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and quality oversight to junior and mid-level engineers
- Support procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, as needed
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and provide practical, cost-effective solutions Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Must have Professional Engineer (PE) license (or able to obtain a PE in CO if not already licensed in CO).
- 10-15+ years of experience in an EPC or similar project-based environment
- Strong experience with rotating equipment and pressure vessels
- Solid understanding of process conditions (pressure, temperature, flow, materials) and their impact on mechanical design
- Proven ability to work across disciplines and communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience reviewing and approving engineering deliverables and vendor documentation
