CHAOS is seeking Mechanical Design Interns for Summer 2027! This is a paid, in-person, 12-week internship role. The ideal candidate is technically curious, comfortable working with hardware, able to communicate clearly, and motivated to learn quickly in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment. You will design and build prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful projects into production.
What you may work on:
Own a scoped mechanical design project from concept through prototype, with mentorship from a senior engineer. Build and iterate on 3D CAD models, assemblies, and drawings for structures, frames, mounts, enclosures, and mechanisms.
Minimum Requirements:
Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or any related field. Must be a rising senior at the time of the internship and return to school at the end of the internship to continue academic studies for at least one quarter/semester. Experience working in an academic project team or laboratory. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate engineering program. CAD skills (any platform) and ability to create high-quality engineering drawings that meet common industry standards. Demonstrated hands-on fabrication skills. High competence with, and fluid use of, engineering first principles. US Person status is required as this position needs access to export-controlled data.
Preferred Requirements:
Experience through internships, student teams, research, military service, or personal projects involving aerospace, defense, robotics, vehicles, mechanisms, electronics packaging, or ruggedized hardware. Exposure to structural or thermal analysis using hand calculations or commercial FEA tools. Experience with machining, additive manufacturing, sheet metal, composites, welding, or other fabrication techniques. Experience in SolidWorks and 3D computer-aided design (CAD). Ability to perform basic static and dynamic calculations, component sizing, and tolerancing. Why CHAOS?
