Job Description

R&D Software Engineer About PDCflow PDCflow is a proven leader in payment management and digital workflow software. Collecting payments, securing e-signatures, and delivering invoices are the lifelines of business operation, but managing them separately can be tedious and time-consuming. Our comprehensive platform combines secure payments and document workflows into one frictionless experience, leveraging decades of compliance expertise to streamline operations for our customers. Role Overview We are looking for a Software Engineer (R&D Focused) to play a key role in building PDCflow's next-generation payment and transaction platform. First and foremost, you will be a hands-on backend software engineer helping design, write, and deliver core features for our newest product. Beyond day-to-day product development, you will bring an exploratory R&D mindset to the team: researching emerging technologies, building rapid proofs-of-concept (POCs), and identifying better ways to modernize our stack. Your main day-to-day work will be backend-heavy (Java, Spring, PostgreSQL, Docker), building secure, high-throughput engines for our new product line. Side-by-side with feature delivery, you will explore new tools (such as Claude Code and AI-assisted dev workflows) and test lightweight frameworks (like Svelte) to continually optimize how our engineering organization builds, containerizes, and deploys secure financial technology.
What You'll Do New Product Development:
Design, build, and deploy production-ready RESTful APIs and backend microservices for PDCflow's newest platform features using Java and Spring Boot.
Database & Data Architecture:
Write efficient SQL, design relational schemas, and optimize database performance in PostgreSQL to handle high-volume transaction processing.
Containerization & Operations:
Package, run, and optimize containerized services using Docker across local and deployment environments.
Targeted R&D & Prototyping:
Research, benchmark, and build targeted POCs for emerging tools and architectural patterns before bringing viable solutions into our core codebase.
AI Tool Integration:
Experiment with and incorporate AI-assisted developer workflows ( Claude Code , LLM coding agents) to accelerate refactoring, testing, documentation, and feature delivery. What We're Looking For Core Technical Skills 5+ years of hands-on software development experience with a strong foundation in backend engineering.
Java & Spring Framework:
Solid proficiency in Core Java and Spring Boot for building robust backend services and REST APIs.
Database Fundamentals:
Strong SQL skills with PostgreSQL —ability to analyze, design, and optimize data models during POC development.
Containerization:
Experience using Docker for local development setups, containerizing applications, and environment configuration.
Exploratory Mindset:
A track record of testing new libraries, tools, and developer utilities on your own initiative. Nice-to-Haves / Bonus Skills Active experience or curiosity in AI-assisted development tools ( Claude Code , GitHub Copilot, or CLI LLM integrations). Familiarity with lightweight web frameworks like Svelte for rapid front-end prototyping. Exposure to fintech, payment processing, or compliance environments (PCI-DSS, HIPAA). Familiarity with microservices architecture, messaging queues, or cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP).
Why You'll Love Working Here Flexible Hybrid Model:
Enjoy the best of both worlds with a balanced hybrid schedule at our Ogden, UT office—alternating between 2 days in-office one week and 1 day in-office the next (just 6 days in-office per month).
High Autonomy & Freedom:
You get dedicated time and space to investigate new tech without being locked into rigid, repetitive ticket-slog sprints.
Direct Team Impact:
Your research and POCs will directly influence the tech stack, tooling, and day-to-day productivity of the entire PDCflow engineering team.
Modern Developer Culture:
We actively embrace cutting-edge AI utilities like Claude Code to automate boilerplate work and focus on solving real engineering problems.
Competitive Benefits:
Comprehensive Health, Vision, Dental, 401(k) match, generous PTO, and team perks.

Benefits

  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • 401(k) Plans
  • Health Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
