Full-Time | Permanent |
Salary Schedule:
Mon.- Fri. 8am-5pm
Language:
English | Bilingual (preferred) The Mechanical & Thermal Engineer is responsible for providing first-level mechanical and thermal engineering support for customer issues involving server, storage, networking, and AI rack systems, including liquid-cooled rack platforms. This position serves as a technical representative of the WYUS Forward Engineering Team within manufacturing operations and acts as a key interface between customers, factory teams, suppliers, and R D engineering organizations. The engineer evaluates mechanical and thermal issues, gathers and analyzes appropriate technical data, coordinates troubleshooting activities, identifies next steps, and drives issues toward timely resolution. The position supports products throughout the New Product Introduction (NPI) and Mass Production (MP) phases, including EVT, DVT, and PVT builds. The role requires strong hands-on engineering capability, effective communication, and the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams in both factory and laboratory environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate mechanical issues involving server and rack assemblies, including fit, alignment, tolerances, fasteners, connectors, cables, brackets, and component integration.
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, tolerances, assembly requirements, and engineering documentation.
- Investigate rack-level integration concerns and mechanical interface issues.
- Support investigation of packaging, handling, transportation, and shipping-related damage.
- Participate in design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) reviews.
- Work with factory and R D engineering teams to identify mechanical root causes and corrective actions.
- Support NPI builds and provide on-site mechanical troubleshooting during EVT, DVT, PVT, and MP. Principle Accountabilities
- Provide first-level mechanical and thermal assessment of customer issues involving server and rack systems.
- Support troubleshooting of mechanical integration, thermal performance, airflow, cooling, and liquid-cooling-related issues.
- Collect, organize, and analyze technical evidence required to identify potential root causes and determine appropriate next steps.
- Coordinate with factory, R D, quality, test engineering, failure analysis, manufacturing, and supplier teams to drive issue resolution.
- Serve as the mechanical and thermal engineering point of contact for customer issues during NPI and mass production.
- Maintain accurate issue status, action items, ownership, and estimated completion dates through resolution.
- Communicate technical findings clearly to customers, management, business units, factory personnel, and engineering teams.
- Identify opportunities to improve debugging methods, test processes, manufacturing processes, and product designs based on recurring issues and lessons learned.
Thermal Engineering Investigate thermal performance issues, including over-temperature events, thermal excursions, airflow concerns, fan behavior, and cooling performance. Analyze thermal and system sensor data to identify abnormal conditions and potential root causes. Support thermal troubleshooting for server and rack-level systems. Evaluate liquid-cooling components and systems, including direct-to-chip cold plates, manifolds, quick disconnects, coolant distribution systems, and leak-detection mechanisms. Support investigation of liquid-cooling performance, leakage, flow, temperature, and integration issues. Work with thermal R D and factory teams to validate corrective actions and confirm product performance. Support thermal testing and validation activities during NPI and mass production. Customer Issue Resolution Act as the first technical point of contact within the Forward Engineering organization for assigned mechanical and thermal customer issues. Review customer-reported issues and determine the information, measurements, logs, photographs, and samples required for initial assessment. Gather system photographs, mechanical measurements, thermal measurements, sensor logs, system management controller data, build history, and other relevant evidence. Translate customer concerns into clear technical questions and actionable requests for factory and R D teams. Coordinate technical discussions and ensure assigned actions have clear owners and expected completion dates. Provide concise and accurate status updates covering known facts, current investigation, next steps, risks, and estimated timelines. Escalate issues appropriately when additional expertise, resources, or management decisions are required. Track assigned issues through closure and ensure corrective actions are documented. Cross-Functional Engineering Support Work closely with failure analysis, test engineering, manufacturing test engineering, quality, manufacturing, and production teams. Collaborate with R D mechanical and thermal engineering teams, including engineering organizations in Taiwan. Support supplier communication and technical investigations when supplier components contribute to customer issues. Participate in factory builds, line investigations, laboratory debug activities, and engineering reviews. Ensure engineering teams receive complete and accurate data before beginning detailed root-cause analysis. Feed recurring issues and lessons learned back into product design, testing, manufacturing processes, and engineering standards. NPI & Mass Production Support Provide mechanical and thermal support throughout EVT, DVT, PVT, and Mass Production phases. Participate in NPI build readiness and production-line issue resolution. Identify potential mechanical and thermal risks before issues impact production or customer deliveries. Support validation of engineering changes and corrective actions. Monitor recurring mechanical and thermal issues and recommend improvements to prevent recurrence. Coordinate with manufacturing and engineering teams to ensure issues do not remain open without defined ownership and next steps. Data Analysis & Technical Documentation Analyze test results, thermal measurements, system sensor data, and manufacturing/build information. Use Excel, Python, or similar tools to organize and analyze engineering data. Develop clear technical summaries, issue reports, presentations, and status updates. Maintain accurate records of troubleshooting activities, findings, corrective actions, and closure status. Create or improve debug tools, data-collection methods, and troubleshooting procedures where appropriate. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Thermal Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Minimum of 3 years of relevant mechanical or thermal engineering experience. Experience supporting servers, storage systems, networking equipment, electronic systems, or similar complex hardware. Working knowledge of mechanical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and mechanical assembly. Working knowledge of heat transfer, thermal management, airflow, and cooling fundamentals. Ability to analyze engineering test data and system sensor information. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel; experience with Python or similar data-analysis tools is preferred. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Ability to communicate complex technical problems clearly and concisely to customers, engineers, factory personnel, and management. Ability to work effectively in factory, laboratory, and office environments. Willingness and ability to travel to manufacturing sites, including Mexico, and occasionally to Taiwan. Strong ownership, problem-solving, follow-through, and escalation-management skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout the workday. Ability to lift, move, and install IT equipment and peripherals (e.g., desktops, printers) as needed. Manual dexterity to handle hardware components, tools, and computer systems. Ability to work within production and warehouse environments while supporting system issues. Visual ability to analyze system data, troubleshoot errors, and review technical information. Ability to respond to urgent technical issues, which may require extended hours or shift flexibility.
Work Environment:
This position operates across office, laboratory, and manufacturing environments. The engineer may be required to work directly on production lines, NPI builds, server and rack systems, thermal test equipment, and liquid-cooling infrastructure. The role may require occasional extended hours, schedule flexibility, or travel based on customer escalations, NPI builds, production requirements, and critical issue-resolution activities.
