Job Description
Job Summary The tooling engineer designs, develops, and maintains the tools, dies, molds, and fixtures used in manufacturing processes and ensures these tools are efficient, reliable, and meet production requirements. Responsibility Must support the die cast/trim and other services' effort to keep a continuous flow of high quality castings through the plant and to the customer by accurately providing and reporting the significant aspects of the visual, dimensional, and process information available. This position must promote a predictive, not reactive, maintenance philosophy by taking a proactive approach to preventative maintenance and quality. Promote plant wide safety and housekeeping, and follow established guidelines for visual management. Responsible for performance evaluation, disciplinary action, training and supervision of tooling department employees on all three shifts. Carries out supervisor responsibilities in the toolroom in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsible for interviewing potential candidates, and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems. Provides hands-on direction and support for production, machining, or support service departments in the resolution of problems. Evaluates department procedures and work instructions, revising if needed, to ensure high efficiency, effectiveness and utilization as well as employee safety. Manage housekeeping by maintain visual management to the established standards in all production areas. Monitor the construction, alteration, and repair of a variety of dies, tools, fixtures, cavities and gauges meeting accuracy requirements, determining techniques and making decisions on metals, allowances, mechanism detail, fit and assembly to achieve maximum die equipment assembly, fixturing, and cavity life with minimum down time while under manufacturing time constraints and pressures. Responsible for meeting the monthly budgets. Manage LPIR reviews. Responsible for determining the most efficient method of completing repairs of dies, tools, fixtures, cavities and gauges and responsible for scheduling PM's, routine service, and emergency repairs of tooling. Track and meet tooling budgets Responsible for contacting tooling vendors for repairs in a timely manner, and securing competitive quotes for repairs being performed. Responsible for tracking tool life and coordinating timely replacement to insure quality levels of customer products. Responsible for replacement cavity process. Other duties as assigned Academic/Educational Requirements High School Diploma or Equivalency Associate's degree or 1-2 yrs. related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
