Job Title:
Senior Mechanical Designer / Draftsman Job Description The Senior Mechanical Designer / Draftsman designs and details mechanical enclosures for motor and pump drive systems used in demanding oil and gas applications. This role focuses on creating accurate 3D models and manufacturing drawings, ensuring designs are practical, cost-effective, and ready for fabrication and assembly. The position requires deep expertise with Autodesk Inventor, strong design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly skills, and the ability to collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams. Responsibilities Design and detail mechanical enclosures for motor and pump drive systems used in oil and gas applications. Produce accurate 3D models, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings using Autodesk Inventor. Develop and maintain complete bills of materials (BOMs) for designed components and assemblies. Manage and support design data, revisions, and lifecycle states using Fusion Manage or similar PLM tools. Ensure all designs are manufacturing-ready, including defining appropriate tolerances, selecting suitable materials, and specifying fasteners. Incorporate weldments, sheet metal, and general fabrication considerations into enclosure and component designs. Collaborate closely with manufacturing, supply chain, electrical, and other engineering disciplines to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and buildable. Participate in formal and informal design reviews and incorporate feedback to improve quality and manufacturability. Prepare designs and documentation suitable for fabrication, machining, and assembly processes. Apply relevant industry standards, specifications, and engineering documentation to all design work. Support the continuous improvement of drafting standards, templates, and best practices within the design team. Contribute to the organization and integrity of CAD and PLM data to support efficient product lifecycle management. Essential Skills Minimum of 10 years of experience as a mechanical designer or draftsman. Demonstrated experience designing enclosures for motor and pump drives in the oil and gas industry. Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Inventor for 3D mechanical modeling, assemblies, and detailed drawings. Hands-on experience with Fusion Manage or similar Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. Strong understanding of design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles. Proven experience preparing designs for fabrication, machining, and assembly. Ability to design and detail sheet metal enclosures and related mechanical components. Ability to read, interpret, and apply industry standards, specifications, and engineering documentation. Strong CAD drafting skills with attention to accuracy, completeness, and clarity in drawings. Solid understanding of tolerance definition, material selection, and fastener specification for mechanical designs. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with bills of materials (BOM) within CAD and PLM environments. Background in designing sheet metal enclosures for industrial applications. Familiarity with best practices for weldments and fabricated structures. Experience contributing to or maintaining drafting standards, templates, and design best practices. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, supply chain, and electrical engineering. Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on practicality, cost-effectiveness, and buildability. Work Environment The role operates in a professional engineering environment focused on mechanical design for oil and gas motor and pump drive systems. You will primarily use Autodesk Inventor for 3D mechanical modeling and drawing creation, and Fusion Manage or similar PLM tools to control design data, revisions, and lifecycle states. Work typically involves close collaboration with manufacturing, supply chain, electrical, and other engineering disciplines, requiring regular interaction to ensure designs are manufacturable and cost-effective. The position is detail-oriented and documentation-driven, with a strong emphasis on accurate CAD models, bills of materials, and clear fabrication and assembly drawings. Standard professional office attire is appropriate, with occasional visits to manufacturing or fabrication areas as needed to support design reviews and production readiness. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Trussville, AL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $150000.00/yr.
