Months Position Summary :
The Joint NCSU
- UNCA Engineering Program prepares students for earning a dual UNC Asheville-NC State mechatronics engineering bachelors degree or for 2+2 transfer to other engineering departments at NC State.
The Engineering Student Success Advisor & Mechatronics Instructor will assist the Director and Associate Director of Engineering in leading student success initiatives in the program to promote increased enrollment and retention. Their work will be guided in areas that include: Helping students navigate the academic rigors of an engineering degree Strengthening academic belonging of engineering students as joint students of UNC Asheville and NC State Facilitating high impact experiences for engineering students Academic instruction Duties include: assisting with academic advising of interested and declared engineering students, student support especially for early-career students in the transition to college engineering curricula
- including office hours and study sessions, student workshops, and assisting with organizing and promoting department events.
In addition, as instructor, will teach 6 contact hours each semester in first-year seminar ( FYS 178, fall semester) and will facilitate courses offered at UNC Asheville for engineering students (spring). As Advisor, will also act as a liaison between the Program and the Academic Success Center, which requires the ability to collaborate and build rapport with faculty, staff, and students.
Minimum Education/Experience/Skill :
Master's degree. Proficient skills in teaching science, math and student success strategies at the undergraduate level. Experience in student support (such as: advising, tutoring, mentoring, career development).
Preferred Education/Experience/Skill :
Master's in engineering (fields include mechanical, electrical, materials science, robotics, or mechatronics) and/or industrial experience in engineering. Candidates with a master's degree in another field with strong STEM related, teaching and/or student advising background and experience are also desired. Proficient skills and experience in teaching science, math and student success strategies. Experience in student support of engineering courses and/or correlate disciplines (such as: precalculus, calculus sequence, physics, computer science).
