This includes research into rocks' mineralogical and mechanical properties via multiscale remote sensing; collaborative development of novel sensor types; and research into remote sensing detection of ore deposits and mines. The Research Professor will develop collaborations with researchers across campus, including geosciences, optical sciences, remote sensing, geography, and others, and with related geological mapping initiatives by US state and national geological surveys. Develop and maintain externally funded research program in remote sensing of geological materials, with emphasis on hyperspectral imaging. This includes writing grant applications and proposals; conducting and supervising research; and publishing and presenting results of research. Ideally, this will include funding and supervising research by graduate and undergraduate students and/or postdoctoral researchers. Salary is entirely dependent upon research and external fundraising, and will be proportionate to the assigned FTE based on available funding. Interface with university, state, regional, and federal initiatives around remote sensing characterization of earth materials. This includes acting as advisor for such initiatives, engaging in collaborative research, serving on graduate committees, mentoring undergraduate students, and helping guide the formation of partnerships in the relevant area. Assist in development and delivery of educational materials related to remote sensing of geological materials. This may include, but is not limited to, teaching, co-teaching, or assisting with graduate, undergraduate, and professional development courses, and will be funded separately from the position via course revenue or other sources. Maintain and enhance university facilities available for geological remote sensing, including point and imaging spectrometers, LiDAR units, drones, and related equipment. This will be funded on a contract basis. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to collect, process, analyze, and ground-truth large datasets from geological remote sensing with software such as ENVI. Programming skills for additional data reduction. Ability to acquire external funding for research in remote sensing of geological materials. Ability to interface effectively with academic and non-academic partner organizations including the US Geological Survey, departments of the state government, and the local and regional mining industry. Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. in geosciences, remote sensing, or a closely related field is required. Experience in multiscale remote sensing data collection and processing is required. Experience in geological field mapping and ground-truthing is required. Preferred Qualifications At least 5 years' experience in the geological remote sensing or GIS industry. Experience running a research program in geological remote sensing. Experience with US Geological Survey EarthMRI or similar remote-sensing based geologic mapping programs. Experience with the metal mining industry, particularly in Arizona.
