Field Geotechnical Engineer Job Description This role offers an excellent opportunity for a developing engineering professional to build a strong foundation in geotechnical and civil engineering. You will support a variety of projects by assisting with research, data collection, field observations, inspections, and both field and laboratory testing, while preparing associated reports or report sections. You will primarily work in an office environment performing engineering analysis, drafting, and proposal support, with some field visits to support testing and observation activities under the supervision of a Professional Engineer. Responsibilities Assist with research, data collection, field observations, and inspections for geotechnical and civil engineering projects. Support field and laboratory testing activities and prepare associated reports or sections of larger technical reports. Evaluate routine laboratory and field data for inclusion in project documentation and coordinate findings with other technical staff and supervisors. Perform basic calculations and engineering analyses under the guidance of a Professional Engineer. Draft routine proposals and assist in the preparation of more complex proposals for engineering projects. Perform plan drafting using CAD software, including the preparation and modification of engineering drawings. Work with engineering technician crews on project sites to support testing, observation, and data-gathering activities. Prepare clear and detailed daily reports documenting field activities, test results, and observations. Collaborate closely with supervisors and other technical professionals on routine and less complex projects to ensure quality and consistency of work products. Follow established safety, quality, and documentation procedures while working both in the office and during field assignments. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering (required, no exceptions). Foundational knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles and practices. Willingness and ability to perform engineering work primarily in an office environment. Ability to assist with field and laboratory testing, including data collection and documentation. Capability to perform basic engineering calculations and analyses under supervision. Proficiency or familiarity with CAD software for plan drafting (such as AutoCAD). Strong analytical skills to evaluate routine laboratory and field data for inclusion in reports. Effective written communication skills to prepare reports, report sections, proposals, and daily field reports. Ability to collaborate with engineering technician crews and technical staff on project sites. Valid driver's license with an acceptable violation history. Additional Skills & Qualifications Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward EIT is beneficial. Experience or coursework in geotechnical analysis and geotechnical investigations. Exposure to construction-related projects and field observation practices. Background or interest in geology as it relates to geotechnical engineering. Basic project management awareness, including organizing tasks and meeting deadlines under supervision. Experience using engineering software tools and applications in a professional or academic setting. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate data collection and reporting. Motivation to develop professionally under the supervision of a Professional Engineer and grow into more complex responsibilities over time. Work Environment The role is primarily office-based, with most work performed in a professional engineering office environment focused on geotechnical and civil projects. You will use CAD software such as AutoCAD, along with other engineering and data analysis tools, to support design, analysis, and reporting activities. While the position is mainly in the office, you will occasionally visit project sites to assist with field testing, observations, and data collection alongside engineering technician crews. Field visits may involve working outdoors and traveling by vehicle, requiring a valid driver's license. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Blue Bell, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50000.00 - $85000.00/yr.
