Structural Steel Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and quality control ensures that welded structures, steel components, and building frameworks comply with engineering blueprints, safety laws, and industry codes . They perform visual inspections, monitor fabrication processes, verify welding procedures, and document quality control data.
Key Responsibilities Weld & Material Inspection:
Inspect structural steel joints, fit-ups, and assemblies before, during, and after welding to check for surface defects, size conformity, and dimensional accuracy.
Code & Blueprint Compliance:
Read and interpret structural blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols to verify that work meets specifications.
Standard Adherence:
Ensure compliance with major structural codes such as
AWS D1.1
(Structural Welding Code - Steel) and related standards like AISC or ASTM.
Procedure & Personnel Verification:
Review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and verify that individual welders hold proper certifications for the tasks they perform.
Testing Coordination:
Witness and review Non-Destructive Testing (NDT/NDE) activities such as ultrasonic (UT), magnetic particle (MT), or liquid penetrant (PT) testing.
Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of inspections, log non-conformances, write daily quality reports, and sign off on completed structural components.
Qualifications & Requirements Certification:
Active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.
Experience:
2 to 5+ years of practical experience in structural steel fabrication, heavy construction, or quality control/assurance.
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of NDT methods, blueprint reading, welding processes (FCAW, GMAW, SMAW), and math proficiency.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for long periods, climb ladders, work at heights or in industrial shop environments, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Soft Skills:
Clear written and verbal communication skills to coordinate with project managers, engineers, and floor welders.
