We are seeking a Certified Bridge Safety Inspector (CBSI) to perform thorough, standards-compliant inspections and assessments of bridges and related structures. The role focuses on visual and technical inspections, non-destructive testing, data collection and reporting to support safe operation, maintenance, load rating and rehabilitation decisions. The ideal candidate will combine strong field inspection experience with technical analysis skills and familiarity with
NBIS, AASHTO
guidelines, inspection software and safety procedures. Key Responsibilities Perform routine and special bridge inspections in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and AASHTO guidelines, including hands-on visual inspections of concrete, steel, timber and other structural elements.
Conduct non-destructive testing (NDT) such as ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, dye penetrant testing and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to evaluate material condition and subsurface issues.
Operate under-bridge inspection units, perform rope access inspections, and safely conduct under-bridge and confined space inspections following fall protection and PPE protocols.
Perform scour assessments, hydraulic reviews, corrosion assessments and provide input to load rating and structural analysis.
Collect, document and photograph condition data in the field; prepare clear, timely bridge inspection reports and recommended rehabilitation/repair actions.
Enter and manage National Bridge Inventory (NBI) data and inspection records in bridge management systems (Pontis/BrM) and AASHTOWare Bridge Rating as required.
Carry out drone/UAV inspections and structural health monitoring when appropriate to supplement visual inspection data.
Support load testing, welding inspection, QA/QC and construction inspection activities as needed during rehabilitation or repair projects.
Coordinate traffic control and lane closure planning for safe inspection operations, and collaborate with contractors, agencies and stakeholders to manage field logistics.
Provide technical input for contract and project management tasks, cost estimates and repair prioritization; maintain accurate documentation for audits and compliance reviews. Qualifications Certified Bridge Safety Inspector (CBSI) certification required and proven experience as a bridge inspector.
Minimum 3 years of bridge inspection experience performing visual inspections and field assessments; highway or municipal bridge inspection experience preferred.
Working knowledge of National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and AASHTO guidelines; experience with load rating and structural analysis tools.
Hands-on experience with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods (ultrasonic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant) and familiarity with ground penetrating radar (GPR) is highly desirable.
Proficiency with Bridge Management Systems (Pontis/BrM), AASHTOWare Bridge Rating, bridge inspection reporting and NBI data entry.
Experience operating under-bridge inspection units, rope access techniques, or equivalent fall protection certifications; drone/UAV inspection experience a plus.
Background in scour assessment, hydraulic analysis, corrosion assessment, concrete and steel inspection; timber inspection experience a plus.
Familiarity with structural health monitoring, load testing, rehabilitation/repair recommendations and welding inspection, QA/QC and construction inspection practices.
Proficient with AutoCAD/CAD, GIS and Microsoft Office; strong photography and documentation skills for inspection records.
Valid drivers license, ability to travel to field sites, and capability to work safely in varied environmental conditions; strong attention to safety procedures and PPE compliance.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and aptitude for collaborative work across multidisciplinary teams.
