Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are developing the SMR-300 small modular reactor, an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean nuclear energy. SMR LLC, a member of the Holtec International family, is seeking a Senior Valve Engineer to join a growing multidisciplinary team designing the next-generation nuclear power plant. This role involves the design, specification, selection, and review of valves and actuators used throughout the SMR-300 power plant. The Senior Valve Engineer leads complex valve and actuator engineering scope across multiple plant systems, providing technical direction, resolving high-consequence issues, and ensuring design and procurement readiness for safety-related and quality-significant applications. The position requires close collaboration with mechanical, process, controls, and systems engineering teams, as well as procurement, quality, and licensing organizations. The successful candidate will interface with vendors, apply relevant codes and standards, and ensure compliance with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead valve scope planning and execution for multiple plant systems, including prioritization, schedule alignment, and technical risk management. Serve as technical authority for safety-related valve applications, including qualification basis development and Class 1E integration where applicable. Develop and review procurement specifications for control, isolation, pressure relief, check valves, and specialty nuclear-grade valves. Perform and review valve sizing calculations, actuator torque analyses, and operability evaluations under normal and transient conditions. Lead vendor technical evaluations, bid clarifications, and pre-award/post-award technical alignment to ensure deliverables meet nuclear quality and licensing requirements with a focus on current nuclear industry standards, performance trends, and NRC regulations. Drive resolution of cross-functional interface issues affecting valve performance, operability, and regulatory compliance. Support licensing deliverables and ensure valve-related design decisions align with regulatory commitments and safety analyses. Mentor junior engineers and review work products including datasheets, specifications, calculations, and vendor documentation.
Minimum Requirements:
BS in Mechanical Engineering or closely related ABET-accredited engineering discipline. 9-15 years of experience in valve and actuator engineering within the nuclear or energy industry. Minimum 5 years of experience supporting nuclear power plant design, modification, or operations in a design or operational capacity. Demonstrated experience developing and executing valve procurement packages, including technical specifications, vendor evaluations, document review, and acceptance testing oversight. Strong working knowledge of
ASME BPVC, ASME B16, API, MSS
standards, and nuclear quality assurance requirements (e.g., NQA-1) as applied to valves and actuators. Demonstrated capability leading technical decision-making and resolving complex engineering issues with limited oversight. Knowledge of NRC regulations applicable to mechanical components (including 10 CFR Part 50/52 and Part 810). Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Systems Engineering. Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT with intent to obtain PE. Experience supporting design certification, construction, or commissioning of a nuclear power plant. Experience working with operations personnel on valve testing and diagnostic programs. Familiarity with valve sizing software and digital datasheet platforms.
