Our product portfolio includes free-space optical communication systems, precision optical assemblies, and ruggedized opto-electronic hardware, alongside emerging satellite programs. We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support both our space-focused initiatives and our standard opto-electronic product development efforts. Position Overview Optilab is seeking an Optical Engineer to support the design, development, and production of a broad range of opto-electronic devices and optical systems, while also contributing to advanced space, telescope, and free space optical (FSO) communication applications. This role is intentionally balanced between core product support—including optical assemblies, electro-optical subsystems, and production hardware—and next-generation optical system development for demanding applications. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable improving existing designs and pushing new concepts from analysis through test and integration. Key Responsibilities Design, analyze, and support optical and opto-electronic devices used in Optilab's standard product portfolio Perform optical modeling, tolerance analysis, and performance optimization for production hardware Support optical alignment, integration, and troubleshooting in laboratory and manufacturing environments Contribute to the design and analysis of telescope-based systems, including imaging, beam expansion, and pointing optics Support free space optical communication systems, including transmit/receive optics and beam delivery architectures Perform system-level trade studies addressing optical throughput, wavefront quality, pointing stability, and environmental effects Support development and test of prototype systems for space or airborne applications Participate in optical verification activities, including environmental testing and performance characterization Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to improve yield, robustness, and repeatability Support vendor selection, component specifications, and incoming inspection criteria Assist with root-cause analysis and corrective actions for optical performance issues Use optical design tools such as Zemax/OpticStudio, Code V, or equivalent for analysis, simulation, and documentation Develop and execute optical test plans; analyze and report performance data Prepare clear technical documentation, procedures, and reports Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers throughout the product lifecycle Required Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field Strong foundation in geometrical optics, physical optics, and radiometry Hands-on experience with optical alignment, integration, and laboratory testing Experience using optical design and analysis software (e.g., Zemax, Code V) Familiarity with opto-mechanical tolerancing and production considerations Ability to work on-site in Phoenix, Arizona Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting production optical hardware in a manufacturing environment Experience with telescope or free space optical systems Familiarity with lasers, detectors, imaging sensors, and electro-optical subsystems Experience with environmental testing and reliability considerations Working knowledge of MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for optical analysis Experience transitioning designs from prototype to production What Optilab Offers A role spanning both production hardware and advanced optical systems Hands-on ownership of real optical products from concept to delivery Collaborative, engineering-driven environment Phoenix-based headquarters within a growing optics, aerospace, and photonics ecosystem, or an opportunity to grow with a new team.
