Optical Communications Location:
Melbourne, Florida Position Overview Space Coast Photonics is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Melbourne, Florida. This is a hands-on design position focused on the development of advanced high-speed electronic and optical communications hardware, including systems operating at data rates up to 224 Gb/s PAM4 . The successful candidate will have significant involvement throughout the complete product development lifecycle—from initial concept and component selection through schematic design, PCB development, laboratory bring-up and debugging, qualification testing, and transition to production. This position is well suited for an engineer who enjoys solving challenging hardware problems and wants direct ownership and involvement in the products they develop. Key Responsibilities Develop analog, digital, high-speed, and power supply circuits for advanced telecommunications and optical communications hardware. Develop hardware supporting high-speed serial interfaces and PAM4 signaling at data rates up to 224 Gb/s. Generate design concepts and select components based on electrical performance, reliability, and system requirements. Create electrical schematics and bills of material (BOMs). Participate in and present designs at engineering design reviews. Work closely with PCB designers to guide placement and routing of high-speed, analog, and power circuitry. Apply appropriate high-speed PCB design practices, including controlled-impedance routing, differential signaling, grounding, power distribution, and signal/power integrity considerations. Perform prototype hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, and design verification in the laboratory. Work with firmware engineers during hardware/firmware integration and system-level debugging. Develop and execute engineering verification and qualification testing. Support the transition of completed designs into production. Troubleshoot technical issues and implement design improvements as required. Technical Experience Candidates should have hands-on experience designing electronic hardware utilizing devices and technologies such as: High-speed SerDes and PAM4 interfaces A/D and D/A converters Digital signal processors (DSPs) Microcontrollers Clock oscillators and related timing circuitry Clock and data recovery (CDR) devices Laser drivers and optical transmitters Electrical and optical power monitoring circuits High-speed amplifiers DC/DC power converters and associated power management circuitry The candidate should have a strong understanding of high-speed PCB design and layout constraints associated with high-speed digital, RF, analog, and power supply circuitry. Required Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. At least 3 years of directly relevant industry experience designing electronic hardware. Strong analog and digital circuit design fundamentals. Experience designing high-speed electronic hardware and printed circuit boards. Experience with DC/DC power conversion and power supply circuit design. Strong understanding of transistors, MOSFETs, operational amplifiers, passive components, feedback circuits, and the effects of component characteristics and parasitics on system performance. Experience with professional electronic schematic capture and PCB design tools. Hands-on experience bringing up and debugging newly fabricated PCB assemblies. Ability to use laboratory test equipment to diagnose and characterize electronic hardware. Ability to independently develop a design from concept through prototype, qualification, and production. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a small engineering team, manage multiple priorities, and respond effectively to unexpected technical challenges. Preferred Qualifications Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering. 5+ years of relevant electrical hardware design experience. Experience with Cadence OrCAD and Allegro schematic capture and PCB design tools. Experience designing high-speed SerDes hardware at 56G, 112G, 224G PAM4 or comparable data rates. Experience with optical communications hardware, fiber-optic transceivers, or related telecommunications equipment. Experience with PSpice or similar circuit simulation tools. Knowledge of feedback/control-loop design and stability analysis. Experience with signal integrity and power integrity analysis. Experience transitioning electronic hardware from engineering development into production. Laboratory Experience The successful candidate should be comfortable working directly with prototype hardware and using high-speed electrical and optical test equipment such as: High-bandwidth oscilloscopes and digital communications analyzers Bit error rate testers (BERTs) RF spectrum analyzers Optical spectrum analyzers Electrical and optical power meters General electronic laboratory test and measurement equipment Work Environment Space Coast Photonics operates with a small, highly technical engineering team. Engineers have direct involvement throughout the complete development process rather than being limited to a single portion of a larger program. The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, communicate effectively with peers and management, plan and execute engineering projects, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to changing technical priorities. Why Space Coast Photonics? Space Coast Photonics provides engineers the opportunity to work on technically challenging, advanced electronic and optical communications products while maintaining direct involvement in the complete product development lifecycle. Our engineers participate in the entire process—from initial architecture and circuit design through PCB development, laboratory testing, troubleshooting, qualification, and production. This provides an opportunity for experienced engineers to have meaningful technical ownership of the products they develop. Export-Control Requirements Space Coast Photonics designs and manufactures products involving U.S. export-controlled technologies. The successful candidate must meet applicable U.S. export-control requirements for access to controlled technical information and hardware.
