Optical Mechanical Design Engineer BluGlass Inc — Nashua, NH (Onsite)

• Full-time About the role BluGlass is bringing gallium-nitride (GaN) blue and visible-wavelength laser diodes from R&D into volume manufacturing on our proprietary RPCVD platform. We're standing up a new butterfly packaging line, and this role owns the hardware that makes it work. You'll design and build the fixtures, tooling, alignment stations, and test systems that turn a bare laser die into a qualified, high-yield butterfly package — die attach through hermetic seal and end-of-line optical/electrical test.

This is a ground-floor build:

you'll set the standard for how these lasers get packaged at scale, working across optical, mechanical, electrical, process, and quality teams. What you'll own The optomechanical hardware for the packaging line: fixtures, jigs, and tooling for die attach, submount and wire bonding, active/passive alignment, lens and fiber coupling, and hermetic lid seal. Active-alignment and fiber-coupling stations — kinematic mounts, flexure stages, and thermal/stability control that hold sub-micron tolerances through attach and cure. Optical and electrical test systems for laser diode manufacturing: LIV characterization, near/far-field beam profiling, spectral (wavelength/linewidth) and polarization measurement, and burn-in/reliability screening. Full technical data packages — 3D models, detailed drawings, tolerance stack-ups and sensitivity analyses (GD&T per

), specs, and assembly/work instructions.

Design release into production:

DFM/DFA, supplier and machine-shop coordination, first-article bring-up, and root-cause investigation of coupling and packaging defects. What you need BS or higher in Mechanical, Optical, or Optomechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related STEM field. 5+ years in optomechanical design, precision assembly tooling, or photonics/laser packaging (or an advanced degree with 3+). Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, CREO/Pro-E, or similar) designing precision fixtures and tooling. Working knowledge of

ANSI/ASME Y14.5

GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis. Solid grounding in geometrical/physical optics, optical alignment, and coupling laser sources to fibers or free-space optics. U.S. Person status as defined by ITAR. Nice to have Laser diode or optoelectronic packaging experience — butterfly, TO-can, or hermetic packages; eutectic/AuSn die attach, wire bonding, active alignment, hermetic sealing. Building optoelectronic test systems (LIV, beam profiling, interferometry/MTF, spectral, reliability/burn-in). Zemax/OpticStudio, plus MATLAB or Python for data analysis. Material selection for thermal/optical stability (CTE matching, high-power laser thermal management). Standing up or scaling a new production line and leading design releases. Automation, motion control, machine-vision alignment; SPC and yield-improvement methods.
