This engineer is expected to be or become a process expert in laser welding, laser ablation, and laser inspection applications, working in both lab and high-volume manufacturing environments. Responsibilities include supporting the development and production ramp of highly automated manufacturing systems that wind, weld, ablate, and inspect cells. The Manufacturing Engineer will work closely with Tesla's internal Product Design, Operations, Facilities, Production, and Quality Engineering teams, and will coordinate cross-functional design activities with equipment suppliers to drive technology, efficiency, and quality initiatives. This individual will own the design and technical transfer of laser processes and tools to Tesla Operations, qualifying them for use with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output. This role is based in Austin, TX, but will function as a global expert on these systems, with some international travel required. What You'll Do Develop laser-based processes for custom high-speed automated manufacturing equipment and qualify them using laboratory analysis Develop and manage FMEA risk assessments to prioritize laser-based projects Manage installation, qualification, and ramp-up of manufacturing equipment, including but not limited to laser systems Work collaboratively as the laser expert to ensure production lines run in a safe, efficient manner producing high-quality parts Collaborate with Production Engineering, EH&S, Quality, Operations, and Design to maximize yield, quality, machine availability, and output Lead safety and ergonomic improvements to production equipment that meet or exceed regulations and best practices Provide hands-on support to the maintenance team to troubleshoot and resolve extended downtime situations Optimize product flow and line efficiency while reducing capex and lead time Generate machine specifications, documentation, and manufacturing instructions What You'll Bring Degree or Equivalent Experience in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, with 5+ years of relevant experience Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software 2+ years of detailed experience developing laser systems Strong hands-on experience with high-volume and pilot manufacturing Structured thinking and problem-solving abilities Strong engineering foundations and aptitude to learn Proven track record using data-driven methodology to solve complex problems Benefits Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire: Medical plans > plan options with $0 payroll deduction Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution Company Paid (Health Savings Accounts) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High-Deductible medical plan with HSA Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits Company paid Basic Life, AD&D Short-term and long-term disability insurance (90 day waiting period) Employee Assistance Program Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions, Accrued hours for Hourly positions), and Paid Holidays Back-up childcare and parenting support resources Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs Tesla Babies program Commuter benefits Employee discounts and perks program Tesla is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer committed to diversity in the workplace.
