Job Title:
Substation Design Engineer We're hiring a Substation Design Engineer to join a local utilities team in Indianapolis, IN. As a Substation Design Engineer, you will conduct engineering studies and perform design calculations for the installation of new and replacement substation equipment. Your role involves performing physical substation engineering design including general arrangement, electrical plans, section view drawings, and more. You will also create or review foundation and structural designs, develop bill of materials, and evaluate geotechnical analysis information to apply it to substation designs. This is a great opportunity for someone with minimal experience who is looking to build a career within a stable industry. Responsibilities Conduct engineering studies and perform design calculations for substation equipment installation. Perform physical substation engineering design including electrical plan, section view drawings, and grounding plans. Create or review foundation and structural designs. Develop bill of materials and evaluate geotechnical analysis information. Design or evaluate site civil plans specific to grading, access, drainage, and soil erosion control. Create material lists and takeoffs from engineering designs. Understand, follow, and apply industry standards to engineering designs. Work iteratively to achieve the best design outcome considering cost, scope, and consistency with existing practices. Coordinate design activities with other multi-discipline project team members. Manage project documents and records. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. Experience with AutoCAD. Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to various stakeholders. Ability to work cross-functionally with planning, protection, construction, and field personnel, as well as external contractors and vendors. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior substation engineering experience or utility engineering experience is a plus. EIT or PE licensure is preferred. Work Environment This role is based in Indianapolis and involves working in the office four days per week, with flexibility for remote work on Fridays after training. The standard workweek is 40 hours, and there may be occasional field visits. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.46 - $40.87/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
