Job Description

Outside Plant Engineer

Our New Teammate You will design, plan, and implement outside plant telecommunications infrastructure. This role involves creating detailed engineering plans, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and coordinating with internal teams and external contractors to deliver high-quality network solutions. You can expect to spend your time accomplishing the following:

  • 80% of time on Objective 1: Engineering Solutions and Customer Projects
  • 20% of time on Objective 2: Internal Task Management and Support Job Responsibilities - What to Expect
  • Underground Engineering
  • Determine optimal fiber routes and tie-in points to the backbone.
  • Identify right-of-way (ROW) owners.
  • Aerial Engineering
  • Identify utility pole owners and validate pole application requirements.
  • Prepare stick diagrams and manage application submissions with utilities.
  • Attend pre- and post-construction ride-outs with utility owners.
  • Inside Plant Engineering
  • Define building entry points and cable pathways to MDF.
  • Determine outlet locations for structured cabling projects.
  • Backbone Engineering
  • Design optimal backbone routes connecting last-mile sites.
  • Assess ROI and identify constraints (e.g., railroad, environmental).
  • Planning & Customer Engagement
  • Create high-level engineering plans and present proposals to customers.
  • Support business development by attending customer and RFP pre-bid meetings.
  • Administrative
  • Generate Statements of Work (SOW) and Bills of Materials (BOM).
  • Request quotes from contractors and suppliers.
  • Estimate internal labor requirements for construction, inspection, splicing, and engineering.
    Your Knowledge & Expertise
  • 5 + years of Infrastructure experience
  • Knowledge of Outside and Inside Plant construction
  • Fiber construction (aerial and underground)
  • Fiber splicing
  • Engineering
  • Inspection
  • Structured cabling
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Visio
  • Detail-oriented
  • Self-management skills
